I feel like I did a great job at achieving the course objectives and I have learned an ample amount of useful information. My attitude about social psychology has not changed, I had a positive and optimistic attitude coming in this semester and I am leaving with the same attitude. The only thing I would do differently is actually getting ahead like I initially planned. One way I have grown academically is I got a better insight on the way people from different cultures live. One skill that I gained from this course is the ability to understand SDT so I am able to understand my personality to better accommodate myself in my professional life.

I don’t really know how to picture my academic growth so I used this instead because this is how I felt finishing all my work and turning in all my assignments.

The top 3 things I learned specifically were enculturation, the goodness of fit, and gender roles. Those 3 things were the ones that stuck out most to me and what I can benefit from in the long run. Often, during the semester my blogs would correspond with the assignments in various ways. Sometimes it was not directly connected with each other but most of the time it was. For instance, for blog 8 the concept of cultural norms and gender roles appeared and then it also correlated with my assignment 3 paper that was on gender roles in another country. Assignments would also relate to other assignments in various ways. One thing that I learned in this course that I learned in a different one was the OCEAN 5 theory. The other course I learned that in was Social psychology which basically addressed it the same way.

I choose this image because I think it’s funny how all of my courses seem to aline with each other in some way even if its the smallest way ever. I just love the fact that I know I’ve actually learned something from a course when I am able to relate it to another course or a real-life scenario.

For this blog, I feel like I do not really notice how people from different cultures express themselves. When I do I feel like it is just stereotyping and therefore being racist. The only occasion I can recall is with Asian/Chinese cultures because they tend to express themselves with a lot of head movement. Another one that I feel like is still racists and stereotyping is Black people using hand-movement to express themselves. I guess for the Asian/Chinese cultures it is what I expected from them because in their culture the bow a lot and for the black culture it is what I expected because it is what I am used to seeing and being around. Both the concepts universality and cultural display help me explain this because both basically state that people learn and share habits and expressions in this case within a group.

I picked this because it wouldn’t be as racists since I am black… and this GIF is literally what I explained about black people using their hands to express themselves.

Fairy Tales adopted a script that always made the women/girl who is typically one of the main characters seem very vulnerable, helpless, and in need of a man figure to save them from their treacherous life. In reference to back then, no, I do not think fairy tales displayed a shared set of cultural norms and values. In 2019, cultural values and cultural norms have shifted a whole 360 from what they use to be. “Girl power” has dominated so many areas of society that being an independent woman who does not need to rely on a man to make them happy, satisfied, and complete is apart of our cultural norms and values. Playing off of what I just said, when main characters display those egalitarian characteristics that I listed above such as Rapunzel from “Tangled” or Merida from “Brave”, then the younger audience will not go on believing that women are helpless and that women can do just as much as men can do. The movie “Anastasia” in which the main characters was a young princess who got separated from her family and trying to find her way back positively influenced me, plus it is one of my favorite movies. This is because she was a princess who became a regular person once she was separated from her family and managed to make it just fine because she was tough and determined but still ended up accomplishing her goal of getting back home. On her journey, she met a guy who was going to help her but he was a kitchen boy and marrying below your status as a princess was just not ok but she did it anyway and did what she wanted to do.

I choose this picture because like it says, “life doesn’t get easier, we just get stronger” and it is important to understand that because it is up to YOU to be the best you can be and be above the complications life throws at you.

While going over SDT and the needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence, it took me some time to grasp the concept. I am not sure if I fully understand it yet, even after reading the additional source but I think I have a pretty decent understanding. Academically, I satisfy the needs of autonomy because I fully understand that I am able to make choices for myself when it comes to what I want to study and what other extra-curriculum activities/ clubs I want to partake in that can aid in my education. When it comes to relatedness, I satisfy those needs bc I care about my educators who take the time out of their summers and days to teach me and show that they care about me because they care about my education without getting anything from it except knowing that they’ve furthered someones career/education. Lastly, academically I satisfy competence because I challenge my mind with the intense courses I take in order to feel like I’m doing something more than just learning.

I used this image because all of the needs for SDT while competing in Daytona Beach and placing 2nd. Cheering is not just a sport but it helps me challenge myself academically as well by learning how to multi-task as well make choices for myself.

For this blog, I found out that numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10 are associated with independent construal of self. This is because what I listed specifically focused on my individual abilities, personality traits, and intelligence, as page 109 stated. Numbers 7 and 8 are associated with interdependent construal of self. This is because those two show a clear overlap between myself and others because I am flexible as stated on page 110. Because of this information, I am confident to say I am more independent rather than interdependent. One proverb that I always hear for being independent is “be yourself” another is “love yourself before you love anyone else”. One proverb for being interdependent is “Life doesn’t make any sense without interdependence. With that being said, Proverbs for being independent are a lot easier to think of because in America, being independent just holds a stronger and better meaning in the lives of the people who live here.

I picked this image because it applies to the 10 “I am” statements but the one most specific to this is “I am beautiful. Many would say that is conceded but I think it is a great trait to have in order to build your own confidence level rather than depending on others to tell you how they think you look because their opinions don’t really matter.

I learned that the stereotype that taking notes is the only way to learn is not completely true. I also learned that the more I study over a period of time the more I am able to retain. For the review sheets, I would go over them prior to the test week and just quiz myself on the topics. I would say for the most part it was very effective for me. I know I could have gotten a better grade maybe if I had created more notes but I am pretty satisfied with the grade I received.

I picked this picture because I do not really take many notes because I just go over the material in the powerpoints and my book. I have to study for a very long time for me to fully grasp and understand the topics.

After taking the test I scored High on Neuroticism, average on Agreeableness, high on Openness, average on Extraversion, and average on Conscientiousness. That would mean that I am sensitive/emotional, enjoy people but love my privacy, imaginative and open to new experiences, trusting yet stubborn, and pretty dependable. If I were to list out my personality traits before taking that test every single one of those statements would be spot on. I was very skeptical before taking the test because I thought it was just some silly game but afterward, I was shocked to find out it knew me better than I know myself. That is why that picture below represents my imaginative, creative, hardworking, and openness.

I am very sensitive and emotional because I love hard and treat people the way I would want to be treated. I love being around my friends but after a while, I simply like being in my room by myself enjoying my OWN company. I create clothes so that is where my imaginative personality trait comes in and my friends always call on me when they need help with something creative because I am the “Creative friend”. I respect other peoples business and I am open with mine so I guess that is why I come off as trusting but when it comes to my attitude I can be very stubborn and it is hard for me to change my mind. Lastly, I am dependable because I also do whatever I can for the people I love and if they need my help I am always there for them.

I used this image of an outfit I just made last night for the pride fest. I picked it because the material, design, and colors all sort of represent my personality in a way that expresses who I am without having to say much at all.

Some important life values I have lived by to pursue my career and schooling is dedication, optimism, and patience. These are very important to me because there are days where I have to dedicate all my time to certain subjects or sacrifice my weekends for school work or studying. That is where optimism and patience follow in because dedication usually requires a lot of positive thoughts as well as patience to see the results from the dedication.
I made the choice to continue onto higher education because I wanted to be the first in my family to graduate from a university as well as prove many statistics wrong. I got held back in the first grade and I was DETERMINED to graduate with my right class, and I did. My parents were the main reason I am where I am right now because they pushed me to be the best person and student I could be and made sure I never settled for less.

Family
I used this picture of me and my family from my high school graduation because this was the greatest moment of my life and I could not have gotten to this point without meeting this mark in life.

These course objectives will help me in the near future by giving me the chance to advance my knowledge in the field of psychology and teach me valuable information about important theories and research. Specifically, teach me how to understand and interpret actions and reasons for people from different cultures and comprehend how their culture influences them. The only thing I expect from this course is to give me the knowledge I am seeking for on cultural influences. I hope to gain the ability to apply the knowledge I learn throughout this session and use it in my future career as well as an everyday quest. The strategies I plan to incorporate throughout this course is to stay ahead of the due dates and always make sure I look at the schedule every day.

SUCCESS

I named this image “Success” that reason being because I am taking this course during the summer because I am determined to succeed. I was told “you can’t succeed until you’ve failed” and that is what I live by. Succession is my main goal and nothing will stir me away from that goal.
