This course has met my expectations and then some. I have learned different stereotypes that exist amongst different cultural groups. I have also learned different actions that are accepted and not accepted in cultures. I feel as if I have achieved all of the course objectives. I now have a better understanding of social psychology and have become more interested. If I could do this class all over, I would do more research upon each topic. One skill that I have gained in this course is understanding how different cultures act and behave and things that they find offensive that other cultures think of as friendly and I will be sure to not try to shake everyone’s hand or get offended if someone does not smile back at me.

This course has taught me more about myself. It has shown me where I stand in a world of many cultures and understanding the differences. I have learned about the stereotypes of men and women and how they are viewed in the world of advertising. I have learned about the self determination theory in which is the study of human motivation and personality. The first concept is just a general, overall summary of what this course has taught me and can be reflected in an assignment takeaway. The stereotype of men and women also came from another assignment takeaway. The self determination concept came from blog 6. I have learned about the self determination theory in my Psyc201s class. I am a huge fan of this theory because it helps me understand more about myself and how my performance as a student.

I work with an Arabic doctor from Lebanon. He does not show much emotion whatsoever. He asked a coworker how he was doing and the coworker responded and said, “with my fingers.” The doctor immediately flipped out and thought something was physically wrong. He wanted the man to go down to the ER, but we told him to calm down that it was just a joke. He explained to us that back home they did not tell jokes. He said they were always serious. The coworker apologized to the doctor and the doctor apologized for not understanding our sense of humor. His reaction was not what I expected at all. I expected laughter and a pat on the back. The cultural display rules explain his behavior because it is his culture norm to act concerned because joking is not common in Lebanon like it is in America.

Fairy tales do reflect cultural norms. They are being revised to fit in with today’s society. The new Beauty and the Beast movie has some scenes that depict two males being gay. Gays have more rights nowadays and it is becoming more of a norm. Frozen is showing that women are becoming more independent and that males are no longer the most dominant gender. Young audiences are going to supportive of the main actors because they all want equality. The Blind Side movie, starring Sandra Bullock had a positive influence on me. This movie showed that you should never care of what others’ opinions are, speak your mind, and remember that at the end of the day family is all that matters.

Autonomy is the ability to make choices according to one’s free will. Academically I satisfy this need by allowing myself to have extra time for assignments to be successful in my classes. I give up my social life at times to allow more time to study and work on assignments. Competence is knowledge, skill, and attitude that allow people to perform tasks. To satisfy this need I will hang on to the information from all of my courses and carry it out in my career. Relatedness is having close relationships with others. To satisfy this need academically, I engage in conversation with my peers. I chose a picture to represent autonomy because I am highly proud of the choices I have made recently to ensure I am successful in my courses.

I am a human who has one of the biggest hearts. It is one of my biggest flaws. I only see the good in people. I love everyone and care for the well-being of all. Honesty is the best policy. I would never want others to lie to me so I do not do it to them. I work for everything I have and depend on no one. I do not act different around certain people. Take me or leave me. All of my sentences are associated with independent construal of self as they are all traits.

On exam 1, I missed a total of five questions and received a score of 90. I read the chapters and augmented my notes as I read through the chapters. I went into as much detail as possible to gather a better understanding. I made a mistake and did not space the review sheet over the week prior to the test. For future tests, I will space time instead of cramming. After looking at the questions I missed, I looked up the answers. I changed my mind on a couple questions and should have went with my gut feeling. Most people would not think of a score of 90 as a bad thing, but I strive for perfection and am aiming for 100.

Upon taking the NEO personality test, I scored 40 on neuroticism. This is a high score that indicates that I am sensitive, emotional, and tend to experience upsetting feelings. This is held to be true because I battle with depression and anxiety. I had a score of 25 on extraversion. It was an average score and means that I moderate in activity and exercise and I do like the company of others, but value privacy. I like to be around a few people at a time, but somedays I like to have my privacy and be alone. I exercise a few times a week and participate in various activities occasionally. 40 was my score on openness. This is a high score that indicates that I am open to new experiences and am imaginative. I do like to explore new things of the world and I have a wild imagination. On agreeableness I scored a 42. This is a high score and means that I am compassionate, good-natured, and eager to cooperate and avoid conflict. This hits the nail on the head on describing me. I care for all people and their well-being and I try my best to get along with everyone. Conflicts makes me nervous so avoiding them are ideal. Conscientiousness had a score of 31. This fell along the lines of average. It means that I am dependable, moderately organized, and I have clear goals, but can set work aside. I feel like my organizational skills need to improve because I feel like a mess that needs to be cleaned up. I have set goals, but think that having fun is also allowed. Overall, my scores were consistent with who I am.

I see myself as a hard working, determined student. My only flaw is that if I am not interested, I give little effort. I have an average level of confidence. I do not see myself as one going above and beyond, although sometimes I try. When I struggle with tasks, I study upon it until I figure it out. My confidence will drop at times when I get confused on an assignment. When I make passing grades on assignments, especially an A, my level of confidence is boosted. My self-efficacy results show that I believe in my ability 75% of the time. I am 96% sure that my ability can grow with effort. The overall score is 83.1%.

In the future, I aspire to be a licensed counselor and I hope to have an understanding of diversity in culture to apply what I know to the client. I want to know differences in cultures and how they impact lives. I also want to interact with other cultures in a respective manner. I expect this course to help me learn how others act and what led them to that action. All I want to gain is more knowledge of cultures around the world. To be successful in this course, I will weave out stereotypes and focus more on facts.
