Journal # 1: Why are you interested in cybersecurity technology?

I didn’t always have an interest in Cybersecurity although I had almost always known what it meant. Growing up, I was around computers /technology very often. My father was a computer science major and in his younger years, was a top coding specialist for General Electric. My younger brother had been coding since he was 10 years old and is currently working as a test engineer in Michigan. I, on the other hand, enjoyed playing computer games and scrolling through social media. However, as many young kids do, I had a bad habit of accidentally visiting malicious sites that would almost compromise our entire household’s internet and our personal information. Luckily after a stern scolding, my father would fix whatever problem we had quickly and would preach the importance of cybersecurity.  I never truly understood how detrimental it was to maintain the soundness of our internet. Fast forward about a decade and I had joined the US Navy. In the Navy, Operational security was preached to us budding sailors from day one. “Loose lips, sink ships” was the motto, and although that was meant to be about sharing secrets, it was a double entendre for our use of internet on board a vessel or any command that we may be stationed at. I finally realized how important it was to maintain our security because if you visit the wrong site, message the wrong person, or say the wrong thing, national security could be at risk. I wanted to make a difference in this world, and to help people or companies that could be taken advantage of by evil individuals to exploit their secrets and/or their information. I developed a new passion for technology and the inner mechanisms of it that I plan to pursue and delve into through my cybersecurity career and hopefully help make peoples interactions on the web as secure as possible.
