Journal #10: How do engineers make cyber networks safer?

Engineers play major roles in securing cyber networks through implementing certain measures and mechanisms. Engineers help create and implement means of authentication like biometrics, two-factor authentication, and multifactor authentication to aid in the prevention of unauthorized access to data. With the usage of fortified security measures, cyberattacks and breaches are drastically reduced. They also assist in the installation and deployment of firewalls to monitor and control network traffic. These firewalls can detect unwanted or suspicious activity and block any unauthorized access attempts. Engineers also ensure that the entity they are assigned to; their software and hardware components are regularly updated with the most up-to-date security patches to mitigate any vulnerabilities within the systems. This also includes the aforementioned firewalls but also anti-virus/anti-malware software to detect and remove malicious software infections. One of the more important jobs of an engineer is keeping up with training whether that’s company wide or within the division they work in. They do this to educate users or employees about the risk management, the best practices within cybersecurity and safe habits. This keeps others informed about potential risks and helps them to be able to recognize and respond to a threat in a effectively and timely manner. Some engineers are in charge of the physical security of assets within an organization like company laptops/computers or certain security assets like Common access cards. They may enforce security policies to secure any mobile devices, like cellphones, personal laptops, tablets, etc., ensuring that they are not used on secure networks, lowering the potential of a data breach. Lastly, many engineers are in charge of recovery planning, employing fast and effective plans of action after a major casualty like a data breach, cyber attacks, or even unforeseen events like natural disasters that can take down an entire system.
