Seth Trimble in a Thriller, UNC shuts down Duke Rivalry in the final seconds

Oh, what a night! College basketball fans witnessed another unforgettable moment in the rivalry between the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team and the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball team on February 7, 2026. With the game tied in the final seconds at Chapel Hill, the unthinkable happened: UNC guard Seth Trimble hit a clutch three-pointer with just seconds remaining, giving North Carolina the lead and sending the home crowd into hysteria. UNC was victorious in a 71-68 victory.

Anytime the Blue Devils face the Tar Heels, the energy is different. This time, the stakes were even higher. Both teams entered the night ranked and fighting for a position in the ACC, setting the stage for another classic chapter in one of college basketball’s greatest rivalries, and the game did not disappoint.

For most of the night, it really looked like Duke had this one. The Blue Devils ran the first half, and freshman Cameron Boozer was absolutely on fire. He scored, grabbed rebounds, and hit the big shots when Duke needed them. By halftime, he had 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Duke was up 41–29. It looked like they had the game in the bag, but anyone who’s seen this rivalry knows a lead over UNC can vanish in a flash. One moment you’re ahead, and the next, everything can flip.

With the clock ticking down, UNC kept their cool and worked the ball around, looking for the perfect shot. Guard Derek Dixon spotted Trimble open in the corner, and he didn’t even think twice; he jumped and sank a beautiful three-pointer right before the buzzer. Just like that, North Carolina finally took the lead for the first time all game!

Fans rushed the court in pure excitement, but the refs had to hold things up for a quick review and make sure there were still 0.4 seconds left. Once the court was cleared, Duke tried one last shot, but time ran out before they could get anything off.

After the game, Trimble said, “It’s crazy. It’s crazy. You dream stuff like this as a kid. You dream of stuff like this even as a grown man before you go to sleep, then, man, I never would have thought that would have been me.”  Trimble also said after winning, We were down that whole game. We maybe didn’t even deserve to win that game, but the effort that we gave those last six minutes was incredible, and for that reason, we absolutely deserve it.”

The win snapped Duke’s 10-game winning streak, bye bye, Blue Devils! and gave this rivalry another unforgettable moment. For everyone in the Smith Center, it was one of those finishes that makes you jump out of your seat, scream at the TV, and maybe even do a little happy dance. I know I did; this North Carolina girl is UNC through and through. Honestly, this is exactly why the Duke vs. UNC matchup is always one of the most exciting games in college basketball.
