SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Interpersonal Communication

Throughout the semester, I was able to engage within interpersonal oral activities and discussion boards. These engagements allowed me to have a better understanding of the Spanish language and interacting with others. I have also experienced interactions of Spanish-speaking taxpayers at my job that I was able to interpret what was being said (even though there was an interpreter on the line).

Because I had to complete these activities, it allowed me to grow more in my understanding of the Spanish language. I was able to use my knowledge to guide me in ensuring if there was a question asked I was able to answer or ask for further explanation, if needed. The assignments were challenging most often than not, but it would not be a helpful tool if it was an easy thing to do. As going through the assignments were challenging, I was able to overcome them by taking my time and using my tools, such as Lingro Learning or Spanish dictionary to fully understand the context.

Presentational Speaking

This semester, I was advised to present multiple times of my knowledge of Spanish by presenting to my Professor. Whether it was by Flipgrid or an uploaded document on Canvas, I showed my ability to present information within another language than English.I

Each presentation that was done this semester allowed me to challenge myself academically and socially. To be able to address the audience with information and to do so in another language was difficult, but it allowed me to grow within the class and myself. I excelled at continuing to overcome any barriers that I may have came across. In the future, slow and steady wins the race so I will ensure that I take my time.

Presentational Writing

Within my Spanish class, I was to complete presentational communication through discussion board. Within our last discussion board, we were advised to complete the assignment within Spanish and respond to classmates doing the same.

These assignments allow me to grow as it allowed to prove myself without speaking. Writing is a language of its own, so to write in Spanish was a new concept for me. The Spanish language differs from English in so many ways. So, to be able to put my new knowledge of how to convert sentences was overwhelming but in the end was an amazing opportunity.

This was the latest discussion board completed by me where the sentences were to be entirely in Spanish.

Interpretive Listening

The activities that were completed to show comprehension of my Spanish knowledge was within test and quizzes. These activities were solely spoken in Spanish.

To reflect, these activities were considerably challenging. I took Spanish classes within High School, however, I did not take it as seriously as I should’ve. After listening to the conversation that were presented in the quizzes and exams, I was able to listen for words that I had learned and take into context of the conversation that was happening even if I did not fully understand certain words. It allowed me to grow as far as being able to comprehend.

Interpretive Reading

Throughout the semester, I used interpretive reading while completing activities within class and outside of class. This allowed me to more than certainly better at interpreting information.

To reflect, the activities were challenging because often it included words that I was not familiar with. It did not get to be unclear or challenging for me as I was able to use my Spanish dictionary to assist me. I found how different the Spanish language and English language was very interesting.
