Chris Shelton of Cure Coffeehouse

Chris Shelton is the Co-Owner of Cure Coffeehouse and Brasserie located in Norfolk and Smithfield. 4.5 years after graduation, Chris found himself working a 9-5 in a suit and tie, but he couldn’t see himself doing that for much longer as there was no motivation. After some brainstorming and researching with his college friend, they decided to open a business. 7 years later, Cure Coffeehouse has opened a second location and won Best Small Business of the Year Award from the Hampton Roads Chamber Commerce. In his speech, Chris touches on taking risks and what it takes to be an entrepreneur.

A part of Chris’ story about how he became an entrepreneur was taking advantage of his resources. When Chris heard about ODU getting funds for an entrepreneurial program, he emailed the people in charge and asked how he could get involved. In response to his “go-getter” attitude, Chris secured as the Managing Director of Old Dominion University’s Innovation Center. Although he already owned a coffee shop, Chris wanted to do more and he achieved that by reaching out and using his resources. ODU offers so many resources not only for entrepreneurs but for all programs that students should take more advantage of.
