Process of Creating a Pitch Pt.1

June 11, 2019

The Meeting

Today Elijah, Jhelen, and I met via Discord to discuss our pitch. Discord is an APP that lets users talk to each other through a joined group. Going into the meeting, I was a bit nervous because I have never met my group members and I wasn’t sure what to expect. We first started by creating a Google Doc that we all had access to and typed out what was needed for the pitch. We created 4 bullet points and divided them amongst each other to work on. I was assigned to work on the promotional blurb and a summary of the problem, Jhelen was assigned to work on a description of the innovation, and Elijah was assigned to work on an overview of how the innovation addresses the problem. We all agreed that we would create our own slides for the part we were assigned and combine them when we were done. To finish the pitch, we decided on voice recording our pitch while presenting our slide show in a video format.

Creating a Promotional Blurb

Coming into this project, I had no idea what a promotional blurb was. I decided to go to Google to see if I could figure out what it meant and learned that is “a short promotional piece accompanying a piece of creative work” (wikipedia). I then found a very helpful website titled “How to Create Your Company’s Promotional Blurb”.

The website detailed three points that you should make when creating a promotional blurb:

  1. Start with a value statement
  2. Offer a reason for being
  3. Close with a benefit

After reviewing each of these topics, I created the following promotional blurb:

We’re cybersecurity majors who are passionate about the safety and well-being of children on the Internet. That’s why we created JET: a smart-device APP that allows children to browse social media sites while learning habits that will protect them from predators online. With this APP, you can ensure that your children are safe, protected, and aware of the dark-side of the Internet…all for free.
