Dealing with Failure

God Complex

In this Ted Talk, Tim Hardford describes what it means to be terrible at failure. To be terrible at failure means to have the mindset that you can never fail. Thinking you are an expert at everything is defined as having a God complex. Business leaders, politicians, anyone who faced under pressure can suffer from this. The point made in this Ted Talk is that it is okay to fail. Nobody would be human if they didn’t fail once in their life. Failure should be looked at as an opportunity for improvement.

Playing Atari Adventure

Playing Atari Adventure was the perfect analogy for dealing with failure. The first room in the game was simple. Grab the key, and open the gate to enter the next room. The next room got a little more complicated when an arrow was added, along with the same key used to unlock the gate. I got past this room once, but I’m not sure how I did it. Once I got past that room, a maze began. This is where the failure part comes in. Going through the maze, you sometimes ended up going in a circle and you had to keep going back and trying again. Yes, I failed the first time going through the maze, but the key is to keep trying and not to give up.
