Opportunities for Workplace Deviance

Cyber technology has changed the way we work, but it’s also made it a lot easier for people to slip into questionable behavior without anyone noticing. When so much of our daily work happens online, it doesn’t take much for someone to misuse information or hide what they’re really doing behind a screen. I noticed this even more when I worked in the military’s cyber department, attacks kept increasing every year, and we had to constantly shift our strategies just to keep up. The number of meetings, briefings, and training sessions we went through practically tripled over time, which really showed how quickly technology can create new risks. At the same time, digital communication makes subtle forms of deviance easier to carry out, whether it’s misusing workplace tools, mishandling sensitive information, or even unintentionally creating vulnerabilities by clicking the wrong link. A small mistake can turn into a major problem when everything is connected. So while technology has made work more efficient in a lot of ways, it has also expanded the opportunities for people to act unethically or for simple errors to have big consequences.
