I learn about the culture and do not impose any judgements or suggestions on any cultural or ethnic group that I myself, am not a part of. I keep an open mind and respect the differences amongst the many cultures in the world and I find that it makes trying to understand all the more easier.

Keeping an open mind and having respect for different cultures helps me to better understand and learn the cultural differences. An example of this being my knowledge that I will never understand the struggles and pains of different cultures and knowing this, increases my empathy and willingness to learn about cultural differences and better educate myself. This helps me comprehend and acknowledge the differences, but can also challenge me as well because at the same token, I won’t ever fully understand the different perspectives that different cultures present because it is a history I am learning and one not already known to myself. Keeping my mind open helped me to ignore the misconceptions and hatred between cultures (i.e the ever-rampant racism and ignorance that comes from people unwilling to hear the ugly truths behind many cultures’ histories.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in the local community is a great way to keep up the strength of the community, by that I mean when bonds are built and friends are made in communities. People in communities have mutual trust in one another that others will always help and/or support them in times of need and in return, do the same for others in said community. Global community is the growing community around the world and is based on communication and understanding between different cultures.

Something I always enjoyed participating in with members of my community was the Easter egg hunts that Portsmouth City Park used to hold when i was younger that had stands where proceeds went back into the community. This helped people by its’ residents putting their money into their community, while also encouraging socialization between community members.

“Fernando”), C. Users can practice their oral communicative skills and also their auditory language skills. Practicing languages with actual people from the culture can really help solidify language comprehension skills and can make practicing easier and more fun.

Recorded speaking assignments and assignments where you interpret what you hear from audio clips of people conversing in Spanish are some of the activities that have helped me study interpersonal communication skills for this class. We’ve had assignments on LingroHub that require us to record ourselves saying specific words or phrases so that we can receive feedback on our accents, our comprehension, and our pronunciation skills to better improve them. A difficulty with these activities is just remembering the different grammar rules between English and Spanish ( an example being English words with ‘PH’ are usually pronounced like an ‘F’ but their Spanish counterparts are usually spelled with the same ‘F’ it sounds like or Spanish words being gendered and having to pay attention to the surrounding sentence for context clues. I am usually great at remembering accent marks though, where they go and for which words which is something I thought I would definitely struggle with more this semester.

Presentational Speaking

This semester I completed an assignment called “Audio Assignment” which entailed us uploading a video of us saying certain vocabulary words from the section in the semester. We also have done other auditory activities that don’t include visuals too, like the audios submitted for the alphabet or the second section grammar list.

In regards to the audio assignment previously mentioned, I got a few words pronounced incorrectly, but felt that I had done a good job. That being said, I reviewed the professor’s notes from that assignment and have practiced on the words I had a few troubles with, which I feel has helped greatly. One thing I struggle with in the aspect of presentational speaking in this class is clear annunciation of certain sounds in the Spanish language, but I have recently made flashcards with the letters and their sounds on them to help with this specific issue I have a little bit of confusion with. Listening to the pronunciations of words or letters that come with the grammar lists we receive has probably been the biggest help though; listening to an actual person pronounce the sounds helps me to better figure out said pronunciations for myself.

Presentational Writing

Our Professor this semester has included various different links to articles, stories, and Spanish news sites to use as tools to help us better understand how sentence composition and writing in Spanish work and to help us develop our language writing skills. We have also had assignments where we write sentences or a small paragraph in Spanish for whatever question asks this of us students, this is to yet again, better our written skills in our development in this class this semester. Below is a copy of part of a written assignment question on the LingroHub Spanish course:

Duke, T. I still have problems with spelling sometimes, but with help from some homemade flashcards, I’m very good at the vocabulary aspect of this Spanish 101 course. In the future I believe I could improve by adding more writing activities to my personal study plan along with more practicing of constructing written sentences.

Interpretive Listening

For interpretive listening activities, I’ve completed assignments in Contraseña where they give audio clips to help answer specific questions and i use the audio to practice to how sentences are put together and formed. I have also watched YouTube videos of Spanish lessons, and I do this at least once a day to help my language memorization skills.

The most challenging aspect of all these interpretive listening activities are actually the same between them all, and that is the speed that fluent Spanish speakers, which is a skill I have yet to develop. I still find this aspect very difficult, but with each audio recording and video watched I hope that soon these types of activities will become much more natural and less frustrating while I continue to learn more of the basics in Spanish and keep up with the repetition of studying and listening every day

Interpretive Reading

Interpretive communication activities that I have worked on in my personal time include reviewing and studying notes provided by my professor to better understand the specific subjects of each week. I take the notes from Contraseña and write them down in my school notebook, where I go back to review the spelling, grammar, and rules applied to whatever section I currently examine and study. Below is a copy of one set of notes I have copied down and studied:

Contrasena_Vocabulario_01-1Download https://drive.google.com/file/d/1m6_UhGwyBP02rU2qyqQuvsBu6fDyQdug/view?usp=sharing

Studying my own written notes of class class notes improves my memory of the things learned. When I phrase sentences in my own words it helps me to better remember and understand the new info. The most challenging part of this method is just the amount of said notes I write at one given time ( example; I wrote ten pages of Spanish notes), but I overcame this by managing not how many notes I write, but how long I right them. I put a timer on so that I don’t become overwhelmed with information and forget everything immediately. With each set of notes I write, highlight, and study; memorizing vocabulary or grammar rules becomes easier and less stressful, while I become more confident with each section.

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication Section 1 Exploring Culture My main practice that I like to employ that helps me understand the many differences in between cultural perspectives is to simply listen and learn.
