Service learning reflection
The service learning experiences that I participated in was the green dot training and club sandwich at Wesley Grace UMC. At green dot training I learned about what a green dot was and how to be a green dot bystander. I also volunteered at club sandwich where I helped the children complete their homework.
The purpose of green dot training was to inform others about how to be a green dot bystander in situations related to domestic and sexual violence and harm. Their goals were for us by the end of the training for us to be able to stand up and speak up when we see something and what signs to look for. They provided us with the tools that we needed to be a green dot bystander.
The purpose of club sandwich is to help students with their homework after school. Their mission is to help prevent children from staying off the streets while their parents are at work. Lastly their goals are to help these children succeed, no matter the age in school and in life.
The needs that green dot training provided for the community was to put an end to domestic violence in the neighborhood. By people speaking up when they see a sign of violence will lower the chances of the situation escalating. This training relates to the field I want to go into because I will be helping people in need. Starting early with the little things will help people in the future. Also, I may be dealing with people who been through this kind of stress and past and left them lifelong damage who I would have to help.
The needs that club sandwich provided for the community was to keep children off the streets while their parents are at work providing free after school homework help every day after school. This volunteer experience relates to my field because my field is all about helping society. And if helping a child complete their homework is one step closer than keeping them off the street is a good thing.
After my fist service learning experience, it opened my eyes to many different things. The green dot training helped me understand that it is okay to speak up when you see something and how it can help the person in the future. It also allowed to be more social with people and work with others. When volunteering with club sandwich it made me realize that many people within the community need help with providing help to make the community better, and it felt good to help others. These opportunities impacted my desire to help people in need and to volunteer more.
These experiences impacted my desire to pursue a career in teaching. It was always one of my dream jobs as a child to become a teacher and coming to college I had intentions on working in the medical field and then I realized that I would rather teach others. When I helped the students with their homework it felt good to help a child understand what they didn’t know.
The degree program that my service learning can relate too would be a degree in would be a bachelor of arts and I would choose this as my parallel major because I would become a teacher since I found out that I enjoy helping and teaching others.
