SPAN 202

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Interpersonal

TalkAbroad #1

My first TalkAbroad was with someone that I have had before, her name is Carla. She always made me feel comfortable and she made me feel like it was okay to not know everything because, in reality, I don’t! I am still learning and progressing. This conversation was about the city and the countryside and the good and bad things around us. We always end up losing ourselves in other topics which makes me feel like I am not just doing an assignment, I am really having a conversation with someone. I learn a lot of new words from her and she pushed me to learn more even after our conversations were done. Carla made me realize that everything we learn in class is not what is used in other countries. Sometimes we use words that are similar but different from those from Spanish-speaking countries. She was able to correct me to fit her way of speaking.

Class Activities

This was my favorite part of class. This was my first time being in breakout rooms through most of the semester. This allowed me to learn from my peers and not just through the teacher. Each person has a weakness and a strength and we fed off each other. Once we hit that breakout room and we were unsure of something we were able to ask each other questions and come out with correct answers.

It’s exciting to talk with people who are also learning because it makes it fun to learn when you know everyone else is struggling but willing to learn. I was able to explain to others something that I knew better and have someone explain to me something that they knew better.

VHL/Quizlet/Lyric Game

Throughout my last semester and this semester, these three sites have been the key to my advancements. Quizlet has little games that you can play to refresh your memory, you can just look up the chapter that you’re in and it will give you the words and meanings which makes for a good game and review. I suck at remembering things so playing games like that helps me a lot. VHL is what we use for homework, so it’s a given that it would help me along. I wasn’t on top of it that much this semester but I made sure to go back and read the chapters so I would stay on task. Lastly, the lyric game is something that my old professor showed our class. It’s a game in which you type in the lyrics that you hear, so it makes it fun and helps when it comes to listening activities.

Presentational

Composition #1

This composition was the first time that I didn’t feel defeated. Profesor Gordus gave me great feedback. I realized that I could work a lot on how much I write. I try to answer everything that the prompt is looking for quickly without giving the paper much substance. This was one of my favorite composition because it allowed me to be a freelancer for a moment. I was able to talk about real problems that I see in the community while using new vocabulary.

Composition #2

This composition was harder to think of because I was using endings that I was unfamiliar with. I found this chapter of the semester to be rather hard for me. I enjoyed the idea of thinking about the future and what I look forward to and how I hope to go about it. In this composition we had the option to choose between two prompts and I chose the one to talk about my plans for the future. After my feedback I realized that I did better than expected and I shouldn’t think too hard because everything I need is in the text and in the tools given.

REFLECTION

Spanish was the hardest class that I have taken thus far but it was also the most fun class. I realized that I don’t have to stress myself out trying to learn something. If I put in the work and try my hardest then it will come to me eventually. After talking to Profesor Gordus, Carla (TalkAbroad) and my classmates, I saw how learning Spanish can be a fun and exciting thing.

In this class, we basically took everything we learned in previous years and applied it. New conjugations and new words. All which were very foreign to me. Before this class nothing felt new or like a challenge because I took Spanish in high school. But for the first time I felt challenged and I really learned something. At the beginning I was still novice but now I have become more comfortable with speaking Spanish with other spanish speakers and even my significant others family because of how far I have come. This class definitely gave me more confidence than I had before.
