SPAN 201

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Interpersonal

TalkAbroad #1

My first TalkAbroad conversation was with Lina Urbano. She was a woman from Columbia. I remember being very nervous about our conversation because I had never done anything like this before. She could tell I was very nervous but she still kept a smile on her face and continued to help me throughout the conversation. I do remember her being the one to initiate the conversation and it was her that asked more of the questions. I felt bad because I knew a typical conversation wasn’t meant to go that way. I knew that was one of my downfalls. She still said that I did very well and that made me feel better. I received a 30/40 for this assignment. Which isn’t bad for my first time.

Talkabroad-Reflection

TalkAbroad #2

My second TalkAbroad was hectic. I was scheduled to have a meeting with a woman but at the last minute she canceled, unfortunately, but I was then paired up with another woman named Carla Bazan, she was from Peru but she was currently staying in Madrid. She was so amazing. I was super nervous at first because I got someone who I didn’t initially plan for but she was super nice. I felt super comfortable conversing with her because we liked a lot of the same things, such as Bad Bunny and art. We barely talked about the initial assignment and got into other topics. We talked about our boyfriends, our least favorite chores, favorite social media platforms, etc. I barely wanted to get off the phone with her. Speaking with her I realized that I have a hard time comprehending what is being said to me, and also responding with the correct conjugations. But she helped a lot, I look forward to speaking with more people like her.

VHL/Quizlet/Lyric Game

Throughout this semester I have found that these three sites have helped my Spanish along the way. I have been using VHL since I began taking Spanish in college and I have utilized Quizlet since taking Spanish classes in high school, so these two weren’t foreign to me. They really helped me to progress since they were easy to understand and they had different kinds of activities to switch up the style of learning. The lyric game that Profesora Sugg showed us this year was also something that helped me learn a lot better. It made me listen and figure out what was being said, something that I tend to have issues with, and it made it fun. It was a cool activity that those in my class and I were able to enjoy together, but it was also fun to enjoy by myself.

Presentational Writing

Composition #1

For my first composition, I chose to write about a hospital scenario, where a nurse is writing about two patients that came in for the day. I enjoy writing compositions, I feel like I can come up with things pretty easily but I have found that I have issues using the wrong form of a word. The feedback from the teacher definitely allowed me to see where I have the most trouble, and what I can do to fix them along the way.

Composition #2

For composition two, I picked the option where you are a leasing manager and you are providing a lease for a tenant. I liked this concept a lot, I believe it was my favorite topic given. It was definitely a bit harder to come up with sentences because there were a lot of words that I wanted to use but they weren’t in our current curriculum. It was still a fun assignment to accomplish, and the teacher was a lot of help during class-time. I still feel like choosing the correct form is something I am not as good at, but I did see an improvement from my last composition.

Class Activities

We had many class activities, some all-together and some that allowed us to work in groups. My favorite activities were the ones that allowed us to work in separate groups. That gave me the ability to learn my different classmates individually, ask them questions about classwork, or just have a quick conversation before we get to the classwork. We learned off each other and that was refreshing.

My favorite activities that we were able to do as a class was watching the “King Kong” commercial, and picking out different statements off the “50 formas de Relajarse” picture. They both allowed for us to laugh for a bit but also to learn. We were able to work together to answer questions for the commercial, and then we were able to hear each others responses for the 50 formas.

Reflection

A lot has happened with the pandemic going on and learning this was has been a challenge for me and many others but at the same time I feel that learning this was has allowed us to communicate together more than we would normally in a natural setting. Even though this was not my preferred way of learning another language, it was still enjoyable and I have taken a lot from being in Professor Sugg’s 201 class.
