With Jamaica being less advanced than the U.S. with technology, it has been targeted numerously by criminals in various countries. Since the rising pandemic (COVID-19) cybercrimes have skyrocketed leaving many individuals and businesses vulnerable to attacks. “Jamaica has no Cyber-Security Act instead it has a Cyber Security Strategy which feeds into its Cybercrimes Act. The Cybercrimes Act attached punitive measures to cyber and cyber-related acts committed by individuals as a means to punish as well as to deter future acts.” (The National Cybersecurity Strategy 2015) The risk of identity theft for citizens living in Jamaica is higher than that of the U.S. because the U.S. has a tremendous cyber task force dedicated to deterring criminals from accessing major files, bank records, and personally identifiable information that could be leaked. The U.S. had a major data leak in 2016 from the widely used search engine and email platform “Yahoo” that resulted in the spillage of over 450 million users. The Consumer Privacy Protection Act was passed in 2017 for the U.S. and focuses on protecting the customer’s personal information and keeping organizations up to date on security breaches thus preventing the misuse of private information. In the United States, cyber security regulation includes directives from the Executive Branch and lawmaking from Congress that defend information technology and computer systems from malware. Although Jamaica has taken pivotal steps towards ongoing cybercrime detection, reaction training must be provided to Jamaican specialized professionals so that they can be aware of the highly volatile industrious disposition of the cybercrime environment. In conclusion, both countries have rendered definitive actions for the security and privacy of consumers and suppliers in this modern day and age.

The National Cybersecurity Strategy.” (2015). www.mset.gov.jm/sites/default/files/Jamaica% 20National%20Cyber%20Security%20S trategy.pdf

Cyber-crimes around the world are at an all-time high and the citizens of the United States and Jamaica are the main culprits in aiding the rising number of online thefts and fraud within the last decade.
