The technology of the internet and communication has brought cybercrimes to life, whereby offenders are able to use these platforms to attack victims from a distance and anonymously. Cybercriminals can facilitate many types of illegal activities, including hacking, phishing and malware distribution, without being present physically at the site of their victims (Yar, 2005). The digital space where the offenders and victims interact online makes a high level of vulnerability, the offenders and the victims can be from any part of the world, and geographical boundaries disappear.

In addition, cyber criminals are now able to extend the range and damage of their activities through technology. For example, one cyber crook can create a phishing scheme that targets many users or deploy ransomware on a global level, which may however affect a large number of victims in one go (Leukfeldt & Yar (2016). The cybercriminals are capable of fishing on a much larger scale and striking multiple victims at a time. Therefore, the potential for damage and monetary losses increases, making cybercrime one of the greatest threats to individuals, businesses, and governments alike. In addition, the anonymity provided by cyber technology can be a reason of a force disparity between offenders and victims. The offenders may use avenues that permit them to remain anonymous and undetected with their “centers of operations” in places that are difficult to identify and come in contact with their victims, thus creating fear and insecurity (Jansen & Leukfeldt, 2018). This confidence in their anonymity can often embolden offenders, as they may think that the risk of getting caught and arrested are lower, which may result in more extreme criminal acts.

However, the assailants are not the only ones to be the winners, since the victims are given options to report assaults and seek assistance through cyber technology. On the internet, webpages and specialized cybercrime reporting agencies have been created to enable victims to come together and cooperate with law enforcement agencies in the war against cybercrimes (Leukfeldt & Yark, 2016).

In conclusion, the cyber technology influence on offender-victim communication is complex, both referring to the issues and the opportunities. Moreover the internet has offered cybercriminals the possibility to commit crimes on a bigger scale with less anonymity. However, the internet has become a stage where those who feel insulted can declare their incidents and make an appeal for what they consider justice. The complexity of the interconnectedness among various parties including law enforcement officers, policymakers and cyber security experts entails a comprehensive knowledge of the technological environment and the concerted efforts by all the parties involved.

References

Jansen, J., & Leukfeldt, R.
