First, deviance is defined as “the fact or state of departing from usual or accepted standards, especially in social or sexual behavior.” My definition of workplace deviance is causing harm or damages to the company you are employed for. Cybertechnology has improved drastically from what it used to be. It is much easier for workplace deviance to occur now, due to cybertechnology because technology has grown over the years and it is much harder to detect the deviance online than it would be face-to-face due to the fact you have to trace it back to one person, which is very challenging. A common form of workplace deviance that I can think of is employees being unsatisfied and lashing out at the company online because they got fired or didn’t get what they wanted, such as a raise. This is very dangerous because that person could leak classified information or sell their companies information for a profit. In my opinion, this is the most common type of cyber workplace deviance. It is very hard to track what all of your co-workers are doing as an employer, which could let workplace deviance go on for years. Each day as it continues that company is losing tons of money. There should be guidelines on what employees have access to in the workplace while they hold their job and also after to prevent things like this from happening. Cyber technology has created new opportunities for workplace deviance because it is much harder to find the person when they are doing behind a computer compared to when they are in person and can be caught on a security camera or by another employee. This could potentially allow the employee to do more damage to the company for a longer period of time before getting caught if they do get caught. Overall, Cybertechnology has created more opportunities for workplace deviance.
