Module 1

How does your major relate to cybersecurity technology?

My major is currently cybersecurity, however, since cybersecurity covers a wide variety of fields and specialties, I haven’t decided what it is I want to specialize in within the field.

Select four other majors offered by ODU and explain how those majors relate to cybersecurity.

Cyber Crime: The study of Cyber Crime focuses on computer-oriented crimes that involve a computer and a network. These crimes can range from impacting a nation’s national security or an individuals safety and well being. Understanding cyber-security and how malicious software works is critical in this field of study.

Computer Engineering: This is a branch of engineering that focuses on several fields relating to computer science and electronic engineering with the main focus being on developing computer hardware and software. Understanding how that software can be abused, manipulated, or altered by malicious actors is crucial.

Information Systems and Technology: This degree focuses on the role information technology plays in today’s business world, and covers information systems design and operation, software development, and information security. All of these disciplines are dependent on a strong foundational knowledge of cyber security.

Computer Science: This is the study of computers and computational systems. Unlike computer engineering above, this degree focuses primarily on software and software systems. Therefore, a strong understanding of cyber security is essential in order to understand how particular software can be abused..

ePortfolio Freewrite Activity: Take fifteen minutes and find out everything you can about yourself by Googling your name. What would others learn about you? Write a quick paragraph in your ePortfolio.

Upon googling my name, I discovered that there where far more people with my name then I had previously realized. After scrolling through a few pages on googles search result page and not finding anything, I decided that I would go and see what the image tab would show me. And not surprisingly, about 3 rows down was my LinkedIn profile picture, along with a link to my profile and resume. Over the past few years I have tried to mitigate the amount of information I share with the public about myself on social media. Had I not done so I’m sure it would’ve been much easier to find a whole plethora of information about me, although I am fully aware that whatever information I had posted prior to my purge is still out there and accessible.
