Throughout this semester in this online Sport Communication course, I have gained a much deeper understanding of how fast-paced and constantly evolving the sports media landscape truly is. At the beginning of the semester, I viewed sport communication mostly as reporting scores or managing social media, but now I see it as a strategic, creative, and data-driven field that plays a major role in shaping how sport is experienced by fans.
The highlight of this course for me was the creation and ongoing evolution of our Sport Jornal. Creating my Sport Journal blog pushed me to think like a content creator and build my own voice in the industry. Writing posts as regularly as we did help me improve my storytelling skills and taught me how to engage an audience, which is essential in modern sport communication. Additionally, assignments like the Sport Penpal served as a great way to develop a meaningful connection with an industry professional. This, despite not being directly related to Sport Communication, can lead to some opportunities in the future for us in the Sport Industry.
Another important takeaway of this class was understanding the role of digital platforms. Sport communication is no longer limited to traditional media; it now includes podcasts, social media, live content, and fan interaction. This course emphasized how professionals must be adaptable and constantly learning new tools to stay relevant. The peer feedback process was also extremely helpful, as it allowed me to see different perspectives and improve my work based on constructive criticism.
Looking ahead, I believe the skills I developed, such as writing, content creation, and understanding audience engagement, will be highly valuable in my future career in sports. Whether I pursue a role in media, marketing, or communications, the ability to tell compelling stories and connect with fans will be essential.
