Describe your research interests and goals. Be very specific about your career objectives and how participation in the Summer only or RUMS program will help you achieve those objectives. Tell us what motivates you to conduct research. Let us know why you feel you are particularly qualified for this program. Provide details of any experiences that you feel are relevant to your application.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Letters from Two References<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Please request that reference letters from an instructor who can best evaluate you and from a former employer or other person who can provide a character reference. Please ask these people to submit the letter directly to <a href=\"mailto:hgaff@odu.edu\"><u>hgaff@odu.edu<\/u><\/a> with your name in the subject line. If your references need more time, you must submit everything else by the deadline, and send an email to Dr. Gaff (<a href=\"mailto:hgaff@odu.edu\"><u>hgaff@odu.edu<\/u><\/a>) to notify us of the situation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When to Submit:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The application deadline is <strong>March<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 600\">15 or until filled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit\">Entry in to the RUMS program is a competitive process. Selected students will be interviewed, and final RUMS participants will be notified by March 15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where to Submit:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All application materials (application form, CV, personal statement) should be submitted electronically to <a href=\"mailto:hgaff@odu.edu\"><u>hgaff@odu.edu<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about the application process, please contact: Dr. Holly Gaff (<a href=\"mailto:hgaff@odu.edu\"><u>hgaff@odu.edu<\/u><\/a>) or Dr. David Gauthier (<a href=\"mailto:dgauthie@odu.edu\">dgauthie@odu.edu<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is RUMS?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>RUMS is a two year, intensive research apprenticeship for undergraduates in science and math.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do RUMS students do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>RUMS students learn technical skills in lab and field research. They also present their research at scientific conferences, and\u00a0annually during the <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.odu.edu\/undergradsymposium\/\">Undergraduate Research Symposium<\/a>. Students write a proposal for a final research project that they will complete at the end of the second year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RUMS timeline<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Spring 1: <\/strong>Students begin their first semester learning basic lab skills and exploring research options.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summer 1:\u00a0<\/strong>Students carry out research tasks in the lab or the field where they\u00a0<span style=\"float: none;background-color: transparent;color: #444444;font-family: Georgia,'Bitstream Charter',serif;font-size: 14px;font-style: normal;font-variant: normal;font-weight: 400;letter-spacing: normal;text-align: left;text-decoration: none;text-indent: 0px\">typically work in teams with faculty, graduate and undergraduate students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fall 1- Spring 2<\/strong>: Students work closely with faculty members to complete project milestones. They may take special courses to complement their research projects. Most students begin presenting research at conferences during fall of the first year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summer 2:<\/strong> Students focus on their own research.
