I think the most memorable part of culture that I learned was the fact that lots of places have a scheduled time for a nap, which I think is pretty great. Thinking back to the beginning of the semester, I am having difficulty recalling much else besides that.

The attitudes in Hispanic culture seem to be more laid back or perhaps understanding of the limitations of the human body, which allow them to justify a nap time. That is something that I do not expect to ever be implemented in America. This practice challenged my worldview in the sense that I think Hispanic culture is much more caring than American culture. I did not hold any misconceptions besides thinking that no where in the world would people make time for such things.

Engaging in Communities

I do not hold much value in engaging in the community. I was in the military for almost 7 years and being on deployment out to sea for an extended period of time, on twelve hour watches, makes me feel like I have done my fair share for now. That is of course subject to change in the future, but I am content with my level of contribution at this point.

Interpersonal Communication

I don’t think we used a service called TalkAbroad in this class… We did have interviews with our professor that were oral and we also had to film one recording.

None of the activities we participated in were unplanned. We didn’t have discussion board posts and the interviews were all scheduled ahead of time and we knew when they were going to take place. I do feel like I have grown from the interviews, I feel more confident in my understanding of the Spanish language. I took some Spanish 10 years ago so I had a pretty good baseline coming into this class. Hopefully that baseline is sufficient to lead me to success in Spanish 102.

Presentational Speaking

I never had to give a presentation for this class. I never spoke in front of anyone.

So this isn’t exactly applicable.

Presentational Writing

One that comes to mind was the schedule we had to write out for one of the projects. I do not have my copy of this or any of the other writings we were to do, as I had a mishap with a coffee, but the schedule was interesting. My level of writing in Spanish improved even though I did have a few spelling errors. It was easy to describe my day but ensuring the correct grammar was used was difficult at times, but I figured it out eventually. I would study for longer in the future if that is what I needed, but I got an A on the assignment so I don’t think that was necessary.

Interpretive Listening

Every interview with Professor Roy required me to listen as she would tell me about herself and things she knew during that process. I could basically get the gist of what she was saying and if I was confused I knew how to ask her what something meant. Como se dice ____ en ingles? It was interesting to learn how much I was able to comprehend when the speaker spoke slowly and enunciated.

Interpretive Reading

I think the only reading we had to do was in lingolearning and it was not very memorable for me. The readings were entirely in Spanish and at that time and even now, I struggled with understanding what is being said. LingoLearning gets a C+ from me in terms of effectively teaching. I learned more in the classroom with my professor than I did alone on my computer. I did not really overcome the difficulty because I think I did poorly on the portions in lingolearning that were reading intensive.

When you have finished adding content to this page, delete all the instructions except the link to the Modes of Communication.

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication Exploring Culture Essentially the bulk of this class helped me gain understanding of cultural perspectives, though not as much as I could have I suppose.
