These cells are responsible for sending signals between the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body. Anesthesiologists use medications that temporarily block or slow down these nerve signals, which prevents patients from feeling pain during surgery. Anesthesiologists can control pain sensations and reflexes by understanding how nerve cells transmit electrical impulses and their communication with organs and muscles.
