This worksheet is based in the state of Virginia and the City of Roanoke. A combination of matching and open-end questions provide different types of questions for students to work through. This worksheet is covered as a group in my classroom and the class worked together to complete this. Students were able to identify the differences in the two different government structures, understand the different forms of government, and identify the court systems and which government they belong to.

This assignment began with a lesson on the local vs. state government in Virginia to identify the different aspects of the two. This sparked from questions from the students asking if voting worked the same in a presidential election as it would for the special election on April 21st. This worksheet allows students to work through the different parts of local and state government as a class and understand how the parts operate with different perspectives. Identifying the courts, explaining the responsibilities of government, and breaking down how the forms of government are different or similar are important factors to this lesson and strengths of this worksheet.

This is a formative assignment used to evaluate student comprehension of civics concepts that are important to understand. This assignment supports the development of civic literacy, encourages analytical thinking, and helps students to build a clear understanding of how the government, that has such a large effect, on their lives works. Students chose to work through this as a group and this allowed different experiences to enter the conversation, such as what the different courts do.

Worksheet-4Download

This assignment is designed to help students compart and contrast local and state government structures and responsibilities.
