From 50 years ago to this day sports have evolved in so many different ways. Even in the span of 5 years all sports have at least changed a little bit. The sport I will be talking about today is baseball. Baseball has always been a very consistent game when it comes to sticking to the rule book but as of late baseball has changed tremendously. If you watch a baseball game on tv you might wonder, why the ballparks always look empty or why there aren’t as many supporting fans as there used to be anymore. It’s only one simple way to put it, baseball is simply boring. Yes, I said it, it is boring, and this is coming from a baseball player. Fans now are having a hard time actually enjoying baseball games because of how long and dragged out they can be. So, the MLB decided to add in some new rules such as the pitch clock which makes the pitcher and batter be ready by a certain time, so at-bats don’t take as long. They’ve also added in a pick off rule as well which limits the pitcher to only pick off twice in the span of an inning which again helps the game go by faster. These two new rules have helped out the sport of baseball tremendously. The average game attendance in 2022 for the MLB was 26,843 and now it has creeped back up to where it was in previous years before 2022 in 2024 the average attendance was 28,513. So, I would say some of the changes the MLB has been making have been working in their favor. A change I think would be made in the next five years in the MLB would probably be the transition to Robot umpires. It has already begun testing in the minor leagues in the Arizona fall league, but We could see a full transition to Robot umpires in the next five years. Something that I would want to be changed or added in the rule book would probably be making starting pitchers at least pitch for 5 innings no matter what I just hate watching starting pitchers come out the game early for no reason at all. What’s a new rule you think could be added within the next five years? Thank you for reading!
