Freshman Learning Community – Oh, the Places You’ll Grow!

Come and explore the career possibilities in plant sciences!

Plants have the potential to solve some of the biggest problems we currently face on Earth, from climate change to food insecurity. A new Learning Community, Oh the Places You’ll Grow!, launched in Fall, 2023 at ODU in which we want to engage incoming freshman in learning about the tremendous career opportunities in plant environmental sciences. With ODU faculty, you’ll be able to ask questions and explore program paths in biology and environmental sciences to get the necessary training at ODU to be competitive for jobs with a BS or higher degree. In the University 101 course, we’ll explore how plants are being used to solve for global problems, take some field trips to see, touch, and smell plants, and hear from professionals working in plant-focused careers about their educational and life journeys. Students will also take other courses that meet general education requirements and count towards the degree program.

If you are interested in majoring in biology and enjoy plants, then consider joining this LC. Participating in the LC is sure to help you determine if plants might be more than just a hobby! If you have questions, contact Dr. Lisa Wallace (lewallac@odu.edu).
