Workplace deviance is described as the deliberate desire to cause harm to an organization. The workplace deviance that comes to my mind would be an insider threat, someone who currently works for the business, but is very dangerous to the company. Cyber technology has created many opportunities for workplace deviance. These threats could be used for personal gain, revenge, aggression, or even to push a political agenda through. Examples of aggression in workplace defiance would be sexual harassment and open hostility towards coworkers. An insider could become trusted and informed on where confidential information is held. With the right knowledge, an insider could easily exploit this information and more. This could lead to criminal acts as well, such as blackmail or even the usage of ransomware on the organization’s network. Depending on the organization, critical information could be everywhere. This new technology is hard to learn, but not impossible. Even the biggest organizations do not have proper cybersecurity, meaning unless there are strong trust practices, tons of information could be at stake due to workplace deviance. Also, depending on the skill of the insider, it could take weeks or even months to figure out they’ve been stealing or changing critical information.
