The media has a major influence on society’s understanding of cybersecurity. The main reason for the influence is that society at large does not know how cybersecurity operates in general. Most people learn from what they see on television or what they read on social media but not actually do the research themselves. What is worse is that those who create content about cybersecurity do not know much about what they are talking about, nor do they know have their information vetted.
In the video “Hacker Rates 12 Hacking Scenes in Movies and TV” the security researcher and author Keren Elazari breaks down specific scenes dealing with various cybersecurity practices. She goes on to say how each scene being evaluated has many flaws and how to manage each situation. She does give credit to the fact that these scenes, although incorrect in actual practice, do bring awareness to the need for cybersecurity.
