Throughout taking this class, I did learn a few things, and it also helped me open my eyes to new aspects that I would of never payed attention to. I found out something new about myself throughout the course as well. I found out that I am considered an independent person. I separate myself from others and focus on my internal attributes. When I do run into customers that have a foreign language barrier I try to be patient with them, because I know I would want the same if I went into another place that didn’t speak English. I try to prevent the customer from feeling uncomfortable or embarrassed because I can’t understand what they are saying. I really enjoyed taking this course. There was not one part that was not interesting to me. One thing that I have realized is that we are basically all the same with minor differences. We should not look down at others because they have a different language, or live differently. If I had to retake this class again, the one thing that I would do differently is to apply myself a little bit more than I have been. I will use everything that I have learned apply it to my future experiences.

One of the blogs that I learned from was blog five. This was about interdependent and independent of one’s self. I learned that being independent is being separate from others. One focuses on their internal attributes as in, ability, intelligence, personality, goals, preferences, and rights. A person that is independent is unique, expressing, and actualizing their inner self. Being interdependent is adjusting oneself to fit in and maintain the interdependence among individuals. Interdependence is being part of a relevant ongoing relationship, striving to meet/create duties, obligations, and social responsibilities. A person that is interdependent is good at reading other’s minds, is sympathetic, and adjusts to the attendant relationship or group to which they belong.

The second blog that I learned from was blog seven. Blog seven talks about autonomy, competence, and motivation. I really had no clue on what the word “autonomy” meant until I worked on the assignment. I learned that autonomy is the ability to make choices according to your own will. Autonomy is making your own decisions and for no one to make them for you. If a person tells you do something, no matter how little the task is, it is still going against your autonomy, because you didn’t make the decision yourself. Competence is a person’s ability to appropriately perform tasks. Motivation is having the desire to do something. Conditions supporting an individual’s experience of autonomy, competence, and relatedness are argued to foster the most volitional and high quality forms of motivation.

The third blog that I learned from is blog eight. Blog eight talks about cultural norms. I learned that advertisements, movies, shows, and so on insert certain images to please what is considered the “norm.” Years ago, women couldn’t show their belly buttons or cleavage on media, but today that has changed. Women showing more cleavage than years before have become the new “norm.” People use to not be allowed to curse on media, but now it happens all the time because it has become normalized. Years from now there will be a new “norm” that people will go by.

The third blog is like assignment four. Assignment four talked about advertising and how they use gender portrayals. Advertisements use certain portrayals that society views or has viewed as normal. If an advertisement is used that is out of the norm, it will be blasted by its audience. Advertisements will use anything that is viewed as normal.

I definitely believe that fairy tales reflect a shared set of cultural norms and values. Different things have become more normalized in today’s society then years ago. Now people are coming out about wanting to be a different sex, and/or people announcing what sex they are attracted to – meaning same sex. There have been more protests on allowing gay marriages. People are now more willing to speak their minds than ever before. While reading the article on, “Tale As Old As Time” Retold: Representation of Gender and Sexuality in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” by Kathy McInerney, I saw where it mentioned that there was a “gay moment” in the movie. The original movie did not have a gay scene in it. There was a lot of controversy on the movie. There were mainly two opinions towards the movie, either people loved that they added a gay part into the movie, or that people hated that the scene was added. Since I am a movie lover, I have noticed that more movies and even shows have included more same sex couples. Movies and shows are definitely trying to conform to the new “normal” to hopefully please everyone.

Autonomy is defined as the ability to make choices according to one’s own free will. To satisfy my needs of autonomy, I need to make my own decisions. If someone tells me to do something, it goes against my autonomy, because I did not make the decision on my own. Even making little compromises can destruct our sense of autonomy. I need to reframe from a situation in a way that enables me to preserve my sense of autonomy. When we remind ourselves, however, of the reasons we’re doing something we don’t want to do, reasons that represent our autonomous desires, it becomes clear that we’ve voluntarily surrendered our autonomy in the name of our autonomous desires.

Competence refers to a person’s ability to appropriately perform tasks. When others think that you are not good at something, it challenges one’s competence when the person does think he or she is good at the task. To satisfy the need for competence, I remind myself that I am good at certain tasks and if someone thinks differently than that is on them. To be successful at competence, one needs to have self-confidence and believe in their self. It is ok to make mistakes; it doesn’t make us incompetent.

Motivation is a major factor in the Self-Determination Theory. Conditions supporting the individual’s experience of autonomy, competence, and relatedness are argued to foster the most volitional and high quality forms of motivation and engagement for activities, including enhanced performance, persistence, and creativity.

Which statements do you think are associated with the dimension of ‘independent construal of self”?      3 4 5 6 8 10

Which statements do you think are associated with the dimension of ‘interdependent construal of self”? 1 2 7 9

The independent construct of self is, a person who is separate or self-contained. They focus on internal attributes (ability, intelligence, personality, goals, preferences, rights). They verify and confirm through social comparison. Examples would be: being unique, expressing yourself, realizing and actualizing your inner self, and striving for your goals.

The interdependent construct of self is, adjusting oneself so as to fit in and maintain the interdependence among individuals. Being interdependence is to be part of a relevant ongoing relationship, strive to meet/create duties, obligations, and social responsibilities. Self is unbound, flexible, and contingent on context. Internal attributes are less salient in thinking, feeling, and acting. Example of this are: adjusting to the attendant relationship or group to which they belong, reading other’s minds, and being sympathetic.

For me, it was easier to think of being independent. I think the definitions of “independent self” are easier to understand and to relate to.

From reading about independent and interdependent self, doing some additional research, and watching a really great video, I think I would consider myself more of an independent person. I am a quiet person most of the time and I try to keep to my self.

By looking over my exam, it showed me which questions I got right and which questions that I need to focus my attention on. When finding the questions that I got wrong it was like a light bulb. It made since why they were the right answers. To find these answers I looked back through my textbook and notes. When I was reading my notes and the textbook I highlighted the things that I thought would be important and I also made side notes. By doing this, it can make it easier to refer back to. I did not realize that there was a review sheet, but I did review one chapter each day until the test. For future test I need to make sure that I look over the review sheet, keep taking good notes, highlighting what I think will be important, and reviewing my notes constantly to make sure I have a good understanding of the information.

Why did I choose to attend college after high school? When I was in high school I chose to volunteer in the guidance department as one of my electives. At the time it was just another class to me. As the weeks went by, I started noticing how much I liked working in the guidance department. I even went to work there when I finished my work in my classes. I was in there every chance I could get. When it was time for me to start thinking about what I wanted to do in life, counseling came to mind. I knew it was going to be a lot of schooling, but I was determined and excited of the thought of becoming a guidance counselor. Another factor to choosing this career would be, being a young child having to go through my parents getting divorced. There was a constant feeling like you were on a rollercoaster. I decided that I wanted to help other kids out there that also feel like they are on a constant roller coaster. I want them to know that there is someone out there that cares about how they are feeling, and to help them cope with those feelings. I have always been told from my family and peers that I have a way with kids. I want to use that to make a child know that they are important.

By reading the course objectives in the syllabus, I know that they will help me on learning the different ways of counseling students from other cultures. I could examine students to see how they act with other students from different cultures. One aspect that I will take in consideration is that no student is the same. I was very interested in taking this course because I wanted to learn how others interact with different cultures than their own, and why they may act in those ways. Culture is a very exciting topic to learn about because it is all around the world. I want to learn better ways of handling other cultures, so when I counsel or travel to new places it will be easier for me to communicate and understand.
