In my view, crime is crime, and labeling offenses as “white-collar” can sometimes make these offenses seem less serious than street crimes, even though the financial and emotional harm can be just as significant or worse. For example, an accountant with legitimate access to company financial systems could manipulate payroll records and transfer funds into their personal account. Because they are authorized to use the system, their actions may go unnoticed for long periods of time.

The perceived anonymity of digital crime also changes the cost-benefit analysis for offenders. Stealing from a cash register involves physical risk, direct witnesses, and immediate suspicion. In contrast, cyber offenses may feel less personal, easier to conceal, and less likely to result in being caught because actions can be hidden behind screens, passwords, and digital systems.

I’ve personally never seen someone publicly discussed as being convicted of a “white-collar crime,” which makes me question whether the distinction itself reflects broader social inequalities. I believe part of the distinction may be rooted in racial and class dynamics, considering that white men have historically dominated many corporate professions. Crimes committed in corporate settings are often framed differently than street crimes, even when the damage is severe. That said, I do believe cybercrime deserves its own classification because of the unique digital environment in which it occurs and white-collar offenses committed through technology could reasonably be categorized as a form of cybercrime.

I agree with Payne’s discussion about the overlap between white-collar crime and cybercrime, but I personally question whether the term white-collar crime should even exist.
