Starting an entirely new life with new people was something that made me extremely nervous. I feel as though going through this huge life change has really benefited me as a person. I have grown in so many ways, and I have learned so much. I have learned to put myself out there and to not be so timid when confronted with a new task. I have learned to advocate for myself and how to speak up when I need some extra guidance on material from class. Although being more outgoing is a very necessary task, the most important thing I have learned this semester is that I can do anything I put my mind to. If you asked me in the beginning of the semester if I would have finished out as strong as I have, I would have doubted my abilities. I have grown so much as a person in these few short months at college so far. I expected college to be tough and challenge me emotionally and academically. These expectations have definitely been met, but I have enjoyed my experience thus far. My classes have kept me extremely busy, and I have learned a lot from each lecture I attend. Classes have not been easy, but I am proud of how well I have kept up. Something I wish I knew 14 weeks ago is that I can’t control everything. There have been many times that I have stressed myself out over certain assignments or exams. I wish I knew starting out that stressing won’t change anything. At the end of the day, the due date will stay the same, and the exam will still need to be completed.

Study Habits

At the beginning of the semester, I was working on figuring out what studying habits worked for me. I was not very big on studying in grade school, so this took some time to figure out. I spent a lot of time studying in the earlier weeks of the semester, but now I don’t study too much. I feel that I spent too much time going over materials, that I got bored and wasn’t retaining the information. My new way of studying is only studying what I am unsure about, and then quizzing myself to make sure I comprehend the material. I would say I spent at least three hours a day studying in the beginning of the semester, compared to studying for around 30 minutes to an hour everyday now. A resource I have found to be very helpful to me that I will be using next semester is professor office hours. These have helped me get extra information about material that was a bit tough for me to understand. Some study techniques I will use next semester are group studying, practice quizzes, and brain dumps. Studying with peers from my class has helped a lot, because they are able to share their knowledge with me and their study tips. I also use brain dumping as a study method so that I can practice memorizing the material.

Health Professions Learning Community

This semester I was enrolled in the appropriate classes for the learning community. Although on the surface each class was different, they all tied together in one aspect or another. I feel as though I saw the most similarities between my HIST 104H class with Prof. White, and my SOC 201S class with Prof. Lopez. The behavioral aspects taught in sociology became topics of discussion in my history class to help us understand why certain things in history occurred. The earlier years held a lot of traditional culture, which was taught and explained in my sociology class. These culturally significant ideas and practices appeared in my history lessons. I found it interesting how the two classes tied in together and were so similar. My CHEM 105N and CHEM 106N were both similar as well. This was expected considering they are both chemistry courses. The materials learned in CHEM 105N were applied in CHEM 106N through hands-on experiments.

Parallel Plan

Throughout the semester, many guest speakers have visited my intro to health professions class. These guest speakers have given me additional information regarding different careers in the healthcare field. Listening to these speakers has given me the opportunity to create my parallel plan for my major. One of the majors that interests me is being an anesthesia nurse. I really enjoyed learning about this career, and the interactive lesson was very fun. I could see myself pursuing this as a parallel plan in the future. Another major I would consider is public health. Learning more about what this major entails changed my perspective on many things. Coming from a tough background, I can relate to many seeking medical financial help. I would love to learn more about this major and consider it in my parallel plan. Having a parallel plan can be very beneficial especially to nursing students. The nursing program is incredibly competitive, and unfortunately, not every student can be accepted. Considering this, it is very important to have a backup plan available to you. The parallel plan will ensure that you have something to fall back on if nursing does not work out. I feel as though both of these majors could benefit my current major. Both of my parallel plan majors are still in the healthcare field just like nursing. At some point, all of the healthcare fields intertwine, so working in either of those careers would be beneficial as a nursing major. I could get extra experience in these fields and then try out nursing again if desired.

First Semester Beginning college was very intimidating and scary.
