My current study methods include a lot of flash cards, quizlet, tutoring and group study sessions. For chemistry/chem lab I have been going to tutoring since week one, about three times a week to help me better understand the material. I have been struggling retaining and understanding the material in both so tutoring has been a really big study helper for me. In both I take lots of notes and use various highlighter colors that are color cornited to which information I absolutely need to know and remember. In history my main study method has been flash cards and group study sessions. Flash cards are a big help for me remembering certain events with important dates as well as important people and how they were significant in history. In class I take lots of notes, especially about events with specific dates in time. Outside of class group study sessions with two other people from the class have been a big help because they give me new ideas on how to remember things. Sociology is one of my easier classes and I mainly just use flash cards for this class. A lot of the material is strong memorization and common sense. In class I take notes and use highlights to highlight important sociologists the teacher talks about. English has to be my most favorite class just because it’s more based on papers and small writings instead of tests and quizzes. I use the writing center a lot for this class to get my papers checked multiple times before submitting. In Health Professions we also do not take tests so it is another favorite class of mine because I do not have to stress as much about it. I have used many of the resources we have talked about in the class for my other classes.
One class I am doing well in so far would be English. It has always been my favorite subject and I have always done well in the class. I have a 100% right now and hope to keep it that way all year. Because English is a primarily paper class I do not have any tests or quizzes in this class as your papers are more like your test. I do not really study for this class considering there are no tests but I do write papers and use the writing center and my teachers office hours a lot. I get my rough draft feedback from the writing center and my final feedback before I turn it in from my teacher so I can make sure I’ve done all that I could do to have a good paper.
The class I struggle most in currently is Chem Lab. I have had a very hard time with the teacher and the material he is trying to teach. For monitoring, some new strategies I will try using will be more group study sessions, more tutoring and more quizlet work. I will also try going to his office hours for him to better explain the material. I plan to study about 2-3 hours a day for this class from now on, I will either sit down with myself or a group and study. I think I need to go back to the basics of the course and really understand that material before I start trying to understand other things because everything is based on the basics and starting equations. I think I have been studying all of the material for the exam, considering we have not had an exam in there yet but one is coming up and they are based on the labs that you do. I think I have gone over and reviewed all the labs and material for the exam. I think I am taking advantage of a lot of the learning support available to me. I go to tutoring 3 times a week but I think I could go to more of
his office hours to hopefully get more understanding. I am not struggling with my motivation to study because I know in the back of my head that I have to end this class with a good grade to be considered for the nursing program. Many of my confusins I have had to go over the TA and go straight to the director of the chemistry department because I have not been able to get answers from the TA. Many of my confusions remain in the last lab that was conducted this previous week and I am getting many answers from the director of chem again. Considering we have not had an exam yet I think in preparation for the first exam I can go to double tutoring as well as office hours and the chemistry success center for any questions I am unsure of, because this is the class I struggle most in I will definitely be trying my hardest in all aspects of studying for exams, retaining material and hopefully getting along better with the TA.
One new material I think I could use to help me better understand material would be the visual learners technique. I have always been more of a visual learner but unfortunately in many of my classes it is just strictly not taking. I think if I can find things that I can draw small sketches of I will have a better time retaining the information. Especially for chem lab I think there would be many things about the labs I could draw out to help me remember what equation goes with that problem.
Outside of class I think one new study material I could use that would help me so much would be tutor.com. I did not know about this until now but it is a 24/7 tutor/ helper to help with any questions you may have 24/7. I am the type of student that needs clarification on a lot of things and while doing my homework I have someone on this website to answer my questions right there right then that would help me significatnly.
