- Transition to college
- What are you most excited about for your first semester of college?
-I am most excited about getting to start over this first semester of collage. I am from a very small town where everyone knows everything about everyone. With moving here to Norfolk at ODU I am getting to start over choose the way I want to live the rest of my life. In high school I was a huge procrastinator and now I get the chance to change that. So far I have been doing pretty good and I hope to continue that. I am so excited for collage and what it holds.
- What do you expect to be your biggest challenge this semester? (Think about living on your own, time management, procrastination, making friends etc…)
-I expect my biggest challenge to be this year to be time management. I am definitely the type of person to want to go do something fun over doing school work any day but I am definitely not going to go that this year. It is changing for me to want to do something ahead of time when I could go do something else instead. My whole family has this problem so I think I get it from all of them. I am excited to change those bad habits.
- What other time commitments will you have during your first semester (job, sports, student organization etc…)
- About how many hours will you spend each week with these commitments?
- How do you plan to balance all of these commitments?
-This semester some time commitments I have committed to are, I am a media girl for the ODU football team. I am a photographer and have always loved taking photos. With a little email and talking to the manager of the team I was hired. I will be attending all home football games and occasional practices and media days. It will not be no more than 13 hours a week. I am very good at balancing many things at once and I am use to this kind of situation as I did this same thing in high school so I will be just fine managing everything.
- In high school, what clubs, organizations, or activities did you participate in, if any?
-In high school I was apart of the varsity field hockey all four of my high school years. It is my most favorite sport and I miss it so much, I almost went to collage for it but decided not to. I do plan on playing club and getting my reffing license to ref local high school games. I was also apart of the media team for all my high school’s sports teams. I got into it my sophomore year and loved every minute of it. I obtained my CNA in high school from taking are CNA class my sophomore year and have worked as one ever since.
`
- Is there a club or organization you plan to join this semester and what do you expect to gain from this experience? If not, why not?
-So far I have not seen any clubs or organizations I want to join right now but I definitely see myself joining one in the future. I have really looked into sorority’s as it has been my dream since I was young to be in one. I do plan on joining one next year hopefully, this year I just wanted to focus on school and photography as well as get the hang of things before I jumped into something else. I hope by joining a sorority I will make lots of new friends and hopefully gain family for life.
- Major/Career
- What is your intended major and why did you choose this major?
-My intended major is Nursing. Since I was a small child this is the only profession I have seen myself doing. I come from a long line of nurses and doctors and want to continue that legacy. My aunt is a Nurse Anesthetist and I hope to follow in her foot steps as one myself. I am so excited to learn more about the health professions and the medical world. I really hope I am excepted into the nursing program here at ODU my first year applying and thrive.
- What skills or abilities do you possess that make this major/career a good choice for you?
-I think I possess many skills that make nursing a great major for me. I have started in this field ever since I was 16 years old obtaining my CNA. I have worked in my local nursing home as well as done in home care. I have shadowed my aunt at the hospital she works in as she was a CRNA for the day. I have been introduced too many things in the nursing already which I am hoping gives me an edge in the program. I plan on getting my med-tech this coming summer. I think that this major is the best choice for me because I am so invested and excited already by just the experiences Ive had so far. I am so excited to see what the future has in store for me in this major.
- What are your career goals (in 5 years/in 10 years)?
-My career goals in the next 5 years are I will have hoped to have completed the nursing program and graduated from ODU with my BSN. I hope to be working somewhere hopefully here in Norfolk at the hospital while in anesthesia school pursing my dream of becoming a CRNA. In 10 years I hope to have graduated from anesthesia school and now working as a CRNA. I hope to be working under my own contract somewhere and making a great income. Knowing myself I do not want to work under someone as I want to be a contract only CRNA and hopefully one day start my own practice.
- Study habits
- What do you expect to be the biggest difference between high school and college?
-The biggest difference I think I will see in myself between high school and now is for sure my study habits. In high school I did not study much at all and honestly did not take it very serious. Now being in collage and hearing how tough my major is and how much I need to study and take it serious to succeed I have definitely already changed my ways. I am completing work early now, turning things in days ahead, studying already and hanging my time very well.
- Is there a difference between “studying” and “homework”? Explain your answer.
- Yes there is a big difference. Homework is what teachers assign to practice material you have learned in class that week or day. Homework is what you use to practice even more on top of studying. Studying is what you do on top of homework to learn the material even better to prepare yourself for the next day of class or an upcoming quiz or test. Studying helps you better understand material that you already know but want to understand even more and practice.
- List each class, and tell us how much time you expect to study per week for each class.
-My first class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11-11:50 and it is Introduction to Chemistry. It has been going really good so far, personally in high school I did not like chem but I am really starting to like it here. I plan on studying for about an hour each day on this subject about 5-6 hours each week and about 2 hours on the weekends. I have history form 2-2:50 on those days as well and history not being my best subject I plan to study for about 7 hours on a weekly basis and 3 hours on the weekends. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I have Sociology from 8-9:15 and I plan on studying for about 6 hours on a weekly basis and about an hour one the weekends. I also have chemistry lab on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-2:30 and right now I’m not sure what I need to be studying in there because it corresponds with my intro to chem class. My last class is English from 5:45-7 on these days and English being my best subject depending on the material I don’t think I will be studying as much for this class.
***Important note!!! If you are in an online class you will need to spend time “going to class” and studying. These are two different things!***
- Where do you plan to study?
- What potential distractions can you anticipate?
- How do you plan to avoid these distractions?
-I plan to study either in my room or in a study room in my building Owens. I typically study better by myself where I can work and read at my own pace. In the past I have not worked the best in groups just because I tend to get off topic fast and don’t really study. When I can read material and do flash cards on my own I tend to do better understanding and remembering material. I plan to avoid these distractions by working by myself in my room or in a study room by myself.
- What time of day is your best time to study, and why?
-The best time of day to study for me is at night. For some reason I cannot study very well first thing in the morning or during the mid day. I tend to get supper tired in the mid day and can’t focus at best. Usually when I get home and shower I can focus so much better and I am so much more awake. I also am a much better studier when I am comfortable in my pajamas and working in my own space.
- What specific study techniques do you think work best for you?
-Some study techniques that work best for me are flash cards, quizlet or rereading. Flash cards tend to be the best for me so far with memorization. I used them to study for my CNA boards and they were a life saver. A lot of terms in the medical field are based of memorization and I think they are a big help when trying to remember things. I also like quizlet just because you can make your own sources but also use ones other people have made because they might have some terms or techniques you like better than your own. Rereading also helps me a lot, going over a chapter or article to help me better understand what I am reading.
