They have a more hands-on understanding of the problems and they can look for direct solutions to fix them. Engineers are problem solvers and if they can have an understanding of cyber security or work with someone who does then they can assist in the process of creating solutions to fixing a system and improving its security. However, engineers aren’t the only ones who could assist in cyber security. Cybersecurity is a field that is constantly evolving and it relates to several other fields of study as well. Therefore, in order to be able to progress cybersecurity and improve upon it for the future. It will require the assistance of those in other fields with innovative ideas and different perspectives on the topic to move forward. One very closely related topic would be criminal justice, which would tie to cybercrime heavily. Cybercrime is a growing concern in recent years especially with different threats including ones such as Stuxnet which was an attack that caused physical damage in the real world. Not only that but there are many people who target companies and individuals through the internet with the intention of causing them harm. Some of these attacks or cyber crimes can include target businesses with ransomware, scamming unsuspecting victims with phishing attacks, and cyber harassment or cyberstalking. Also, in some cases individuals personal information can be leaked due to a cyberattack which could lead to identity theft. These are very serious crimes which should be dealt with just as seriously as those that happen in the physical world because they can have just as much of an impact on the victims and businesses they target. Those in criminal justice should take time top understand cybersecurity as well because this would be beneficial when creating laws for cybercrimes in the future which is very important.

Source: Introduction to Cyberthreats Cyber Stalking and Cyber Harassment Legislation in the United States: A Qualitative Analysis

Engineers can help make improvements to cybersecurity with their knowledge of hardware and software on networks and systems.
