The Human Factor in Cybersecurity

Working with a limited budget can cause some investment problems in our company. With an issue like this, it makes it important to allocate our resources wisely. In this paper I will explain how investing in essential technologies to prevent significant threats and investing in training employees to prevent recurring issues is the best way to allocate our limited resources.

Technologies
In Floridi’s “Hyperhistory and the Philosophy of Information Policies”, he states how our life essentially depends on technology. This makes cybersecurity essential in defending important technological assets. While human error can create an issue with defending our digital assets, it will not stop hackers from getting through outdated and insecure technologies. To stop hackers from getting into our databases and stealing our valuable assets, we need to invest in up-to-date two-factor authentication, firewalls, and encryption systems. Firewalls are one of the most important technologies for stopping cyber threats, as without them, hackers will have free access to everything within a database after they get through. With firewalls, they will act as another security layer that the hackers will have to bypass to get into a database. With up-to-date firewall systems, it will make it extremely hard for hackers to achieve their goals. Two-factor authentication will also make it difficult for cyber threats to get in because they will not have access to the device that will get the code to get past the two-factor authentication system. Encryption systems are crucial because they will make it difficult for hackers to do anything with the assets if they ever get access to them. If the assets are encrypted, hackers will not be able to do anything with the assets as they will need a key to decrypt the data.

Employee Training
In Hans Jonas’s essay “Technology and Responsibility: Reflections on the New Tasks of Ethics”, he talks about how we need to be careful within taking big risks with technology. In the cybersecurity world, phishing scams and weak passwords are recurring issues when it comes to human error. One way we could solve this issue is by investing in training that will teach our employees to not fall for scams. If we can train our employees in not falling for phishing scams, it will lower the risk of human error drastically. Training them in using stronger passwords will also help with this issue. Instead of using the same password for everything, we should teach our employees how to make strong passwords, as well as changing them every couple of months.

How to properly fund these investments
Since our budget is limited, we need to start with the cheapest options first. This will help us get a reference to how much money we will have left to spend on more expensive options. The investment we should start with first is the training. Training would be cheaper since we would not have to buy any expensive software. We can train our employees through videos that we create, which will be cheaper than hiring somebody to train our employees in person. After training, we can invest the rest of our money into adding the most important and up-to-date firewall, encryption, and two-factor authentication technologies that we can buy.

Conclusion
In conclusion, we must invest wisely when dealing with a limited budget. Investing first on training our employees can mitigate most of human error and give us a reference on how much money we will have left to use on cybersecurity technologies. After training, we can invest on important cybersecurity technologies so that our valuable digital assets are secure. Like Floridi said, our life depends on technology. We must do what we can to protect our company’s assets from any type of cyber threat.
