The areas that seem the least appealing to me are the cyberspace effects area and the oversight and governance areas. The principle of relativism can be related to cybersecurity when you talk about how new types of crimes and security issues arose from the invention of technology and the cyber space. The principle of objectivity can be related to cybersecurity when you talk about certain question such as “How should hackers be punished?” The principle of parsimony can be related to cybersecurity when you try to explain something such as “Why do people commit cybercrime?” as simple as possible. The principle of Empiricism can relate to cybersecurity when the data you use to try and counter future cyber attacks is based on real cyber attacks that have occurred in the past. Skepticism relates to cybersecurity when you question other peoples’ analyses on what to do to counter a certain cyber-attack. Ethical neutrality can relate to cybersecurity when the people who are conducting cybersecurity-related experiments are enforcing ethical standards to the people they are experimenting on. Determinism can relate to cybersecurity when you are trying to figure out what the cause of a certain cyber-attack was.

Journal Entry 3

One-way researchers might be able to use this information to study breaches is by looking at the data and recognizing any type of common occurrence with data breaches and who they effect. This could help them in identifying what security measures they will recommend limiting the number of breaches in the future. With this information they will also be able to tell which sectors are getting hit with breaches the most, which will help them with assigning security measures against breaches by who needs them the most. The information will also help researchers look at what types of security measures were used in the past to try and stop breaches and how effective they truly were in stopping those breaches. It can help them with trying to invent new ways of defending different companies from breaches in their systems.

Journal Entry 4

The lower levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs can relate to how people need Wi-Fi in order to connect to the internet. Without a connection, the internet is unusable. After a person has a connection to the internet, the next level would be to have a secure and protected connection to the internet. If the connection to the internet is unstable, it would cause the person to not even want to use the internet. If the internet connection isn’t protected, it could cause them to be vulnerable to things such as cyber-attacks. The next level would be something like a social media platform. After the person has a secure and protected internet connection, they will be able to do whatever they want to do, such as engage on a social media platform.

Journal Entry 5

The motive that people use when committing a cybercrime that made the most sense to me was the motive with multiple reasons. There are a lot of people who do something for multiple reasons. A monetary motive is the number 2 spot for me because I feel as if everyone is motivated by money. Even though people are motivated by money, I don’t think it gives them an excuse to do something illegal. There are plenty of ways to make money legally. A political motive somewhat makes sense to me because the people are trying to push a narrative or a point. Even though you are trying to push a narrative does not mean you should be doing it in an illegal way. It will do nothing but make people not like you. People who commit cybercrimes for recognition kind of make sense. There are people in all fields of crime that do something so that they can see themselves on the news. Instead of doing something illegal for recognition, they should do something positive within their local community and get recognition that way. People who commit cybercrimes for entertainment doesn’t really make sense to me. I understand that people do crimes because they get an adrenaline rush. To me it doesn’t excuse them from doing it, as there are many other ways that you can get an adrenaline rush. Committing a cybercrime out of revenge does not make sense to me. If you want to get revenge, you should seek revenge through the justice system. Doing something illegal out of revenge will do nothing but make things worse for you. The motive that makes the least amount of sense to me is doing it out of boredom. Just because you are bored it does not mean you should commit a crime. You can read a book if you are bored.

Journal Entry 6

One way that you can find out if you are on a fake website is by looking for any spelling mistakes within the URL. I believe that different patterns are found across the world due to access to the internet and the varying rules for different countries regarding internet usage. If you are in a third world country that doesn’t have good access to the internet, you probably won’t end up having an addiction to social media. In China, they have strict internet restrictions for people like minors. I believe that it would be important for military leaders to start recognizing this discipline because it will give them an advantage in preventing cyber-attacks that might spread misinformation for a strategic gain. Looking at cybersecurity through a social science lens will help them be able to find out a cyber offenders motive for doing what they did. When the article brings up the Russian Information Blitzkrieg, it gives the reader a good example of how important this issue is. If their strategy went unnoticed, it would have caused a lot of division between us and our allies, which is exactly what Russia wants.

Journal Entry 12

One way her description relates to social science behaviors is when she talks about networking. Networking is important in the cybersecurity field. When the video starts talking about the website meetup.com, it brings up how this app can be useful for you to move up in the cybersecurity field by allowing you to network with other people in your area online. Since cognitive theories focus on the way an individual can perceive information based on their thinking, you can put on a positive demeanor and attitude while talking to someone on the website, which will help them recognize that you are a good person to become friends with. From there, your chances of landing a higher role within the cybersecurity field could go up through nepotism.

Journal Entry 13

The main points of the article were about bug bounties and if they are actually cost-effective for smaller businesses. While reading the article, I was surprised to find out that “Hackers are largely motivated by non-monetary factors”. Before reading the article, I would have thought that most hackers who are in the bug bounty field are looking to make some quick money. Some other key points they were able to find in their research was that the hackers that were more worried about reputation than price of bounties were mainly unseasoned hackers, where reputable hackers were more worried about price than they are reputation. This was something that I expected since reputable hackers already have reputation. One key point that they got from this article that I found to be interesting was that “The number of new programs has a statistically insignificant effect on reports companies receive”. I had originally thought that with more programs going into the bug bounty field, hackers would be more spread out and working with different companies resulting in less reports for each company.

Journal Entry 14

I think that collecting information about children is the most serious violation that the author mentioned. I think that collecting information about children would make you look very suspicious and weird. Sharing passwords and addresses of others is the 2nd most serious violation to me. If you share someone’s sensitive information with somebody, you put them at risk of their information getting stolen or them being physically harmed. Illegal searches is the 3rd most serious violation. People who search illegal things on the internet could be searching for things like terrorist videos that advocate for violence, which is not good.
