The IT department has been a major component for the company, as they are the ones who oversee all the digital assets, network systems, and information technology within the company. In efforts to make the transition of cybersecurity to another department run smoothly, I believe that the IT department is the most suitable department for cybersecurity.

Pros of the IT Department
The IT department has a good advantage over the other departments due to their natural fit with cybersecurity. As mentioned earlier, the IT department are the ones who oversee all the company’s digital assets, network systems, and information technology. The role for cybersecurity is to protect those assets that the IT department watches over. Because of this, both cybersecurity and IT basically work in conjunction with each other. Another lead the IT department has over the other departments is the accessibility that cybersecurity will have under the IT department. Because the IT department deals with a lot of things digitally, they have access to a lot of the company’s systems. With cybersecurity in the IT department, it will allow for the cybersecurity department to have an easier means of accessing important systems that they will need to provide protection for. The amount of resources that the IT department will be able to share with the cybersecurity department also gives them a massive upper hand over the other departments. IT and cybersecurity share a lot of the same infrastructure, such as firewalls and virus protection software. Having them work together could give each department an opportunity to help each other hone their skills.

Cons of the IT Department
Even though the IT department has a lot of advantages, it still has some negative aspects compared to the other departments. One of those is a possible conflict of interests. While the IT department’s main goal is to keep all the digital assets of the company operational, cybersecurity’s main goal is to keep all the company’s digital assets secure, with the possibility of hurting the performance of an asset being secondary. This can cause the IT and cybersecurity departments to conflict, which will negatively impact the company. Even with this possibly becoming an issue with the departments, I do not believe that it outweighs the pros of having these two departments working together. Each department should be able to work out their differences in a proper manner. Another disadvantage that the IT department has compared to the other departments is the illusion that one department is underneath the other. Having cybersecurity underneath the IT department might give a look to senior leadership that cybersecurity is not important enough to be separate from IT. This is a valid concern, but most people within senior leadership will not consider cybersecurity and IT to be the same. As mentioned before, IT deals with keeping the company’s digital assets operational, while cybersecurity deals with keeping the company’s digital assets secure, with functionality being secondary. Things like this is what keeps cybersecurity and IT separate, as they have different goals. Furthermore, the focus of each department is another downside to the IT department. Cybersecurity is more than just technology; It also deals with company control and being able to continue the business. Without cybersecurity, cyber-attacks would become rampant, which would cause an unstable environment for the company. It could also cause the company to run out of business. With the cybersecurity department being underneath the IT department, the IT department might undermine the importance of cybersecurity on the business level. While this is true and can happen, I do not think it is highly likely to happen. IT and cybersecurity fields are too similar for IT to not know the importance of cybersecurity on a business level. Also, if cybersecurity were in the IT department, they would probably know more about each other than if they weren’t since they would be working with each other daily.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the IT department is the most suitable department for cybersecurity. The natural fit of each department go hand in hand with each other. The IT department overlooks all the company digital assets, while the cybersecurity department makes sure that all company digital assets are secure. Accessibility and resources are also huge for the IT department, as it will make it easier for the cybersecurity department to access important company networks and systems and help the IT and cybersecurity employees hone their skills while training. While there are many cons to the IT department, they are not more significant than the pros are. The cons that the IT department had are problems that can be handled with communication between each department, while the pros were things that could significantly boost the efficiency and productivity within the workspace.

I have given an analysis with our latest research concerning which department the cybersecurity department should fall under.
