The Goblin Market by Christina Rossetti worked well for Marxist criticism because it was based on economic and material realities. The Goblins were the “haves” and benefitted off the girls while the girls were the “have-nots” and struggled with monetary means to obtain the fruits. I felt by using Marxist criticism for this literary artifact, a reader could identify the work as a product of the socioeconomic conditions of the time and place in which the piece was written.
