Visit PrivacyRights.org to see the types of publicly available information about data breaches. How might researchers use this information to study breaches?
When visiting PrivacyRights.org, the user is initially greeted with a chart of the United States that shows the amount of data breaches within a customizable timeframe. This figure also gives a key which organizes the data breaches by type which include hacking, insider, fraud, and many other types of breaches. The organization of this chart is helpful in determining the total amounts of data breaches, where they occur in the United States, and what kinds of breaches are the most commonly occurring. If a researcher doesn’t want to view the United States as a whole, there is a button that allows the researcher to view each state’s breaches. The research can also view the breaches by categories by clicking on the “View by Category” button. Finally, the site has a “Search Breaches” button which allows the researcher to find any incident(s) that they are interested in. The site offers a lot of insight into what kinds of breaches are occurring, how many, and which locations they are taking place.
