Journal Entry #15

Digital Forensics | Davin Teo | TEDxHongKongSalon – YouTube

Watch this video and think about how the career of digital forensics investigators relate to the social sciences. Write a journal entry describing what you think about the speaker’s pathway to his career.

Davin Teo begins the speech with describing the generalized idea of people who work in digital forensics as being in a white lab coat, in a room with no windows along with a bunch of computers. He said majority of it is accurate besides the white lab coat. He then goes into describing the basic role of a digital forensics investigator by stating some of the operations you could expect. He then describes how he was able to get into digital forensics from his accounting profession. He was given the opportunity to work in the first national digital forensic practice in Australia. He mentioned that he wasn’t too familiar originally with the field and learned a lot through his first opportunity. I believe this is true for a lot of professions because school can only prepare you so much. You won’t actually begin to fully learn until you work or gain experience in the field. This just shows that anyone can have a unique experience in gaining a role in any field.

Digital forensics relate to social science in numerous ways. Digital forensics investigators have to work closely with witnesses, governments, and other things related to policy-making. Despite the actual technical part of the job, digital forensics investigators must make sure they are not crossing any legal boundaries. They frequently rely on other disciplines in order to carry out their functions accordingly.
