Some are more reasonable but others not so much.

Money. Although about 20% of people who do it for the money end up using it for bad habits, 20% of cybercriminals end up reinvesting it, and 15% use it for daily needs, if we’re being honest, it’s the most reasonable option since everyone needs money to survive and access daily things.

2. Multiple reasons that aren’t specified. Understandably, cybercriminals probably have multiple reasons why they do things. While their actions aren’t justified, depending on the reasons why wouldn’t know of, it’s possible we could understand their situation if we found out.

3. Revenge for the most part to an extent is understandable. In this case, I’ll talk about this in the case that the revenge was warranted, and this person gets their karma for what they’ve done. Some revenge acts are petty, unnecessary, and sometimes NOT justified. In a lot of cases though, the victim had it coming.

4. Recognition. This is where things started to get hard to rank on my list. The best way to describe this one was that their heart was simply not in the right place. It’s a dumber reason but wanting recognition and attention is something most people can relate to and understand.

5. Entertainment. Even though the activity is wrong what are you even supposed to say to someone claiming that being a cybercriminal is fun but even something they’d consider a hobby as well? I feel like with the right guidance people that do this for entertainment can be swayed in the right direction.

6. Boredom. This reason could go hand in hand with entertainment, but some could just do it easily even without necessarily calling the activity fun just due to their moral compass. However, I already knew this option would be low on reasonable. Unlike entertainment where some do it because they just enjoy it too much, others so it just because. That mindset is borderline terrifying.

7. Politics. It affects everyone and can cause the most damage. Despite everyone’s differences to go to the level of meshing it with politics could lead to something catastrophic.

This is how I would rank the reasons cybercriminals do what they do.
