They inform the customer what happened and how their website glasswasherparts.com got intruded and how their card information may be at risk at the moment. It just seems off putting. The fact that the breach did not get discovered until months later was disturbing. It’s pretty tone-deaf of them to not apologize for the huge mistake. An economic theory that tied into what I first thought when reading this is called the Principal Agent problem. The third-party platform provider got the company in this mess and were supposed to prioritize the customers and their data but failed and left the customers information vulnerable. While accidents happen, the lack of apology from the company even if the incident wasn’t directly their fault felt like a slap to the face. No compensation offered whatsoever. Another economic theory is the Cost-benefit Analysis. They delayed telling the customers of this due to the backlash they get. They say they didn’t hear about the breach until November when it happened in February. They also said law enforcement was still investigating and asked for them to “wait” to inform the customers who could’ve been affected by this until the investigation moves forward. I find the law enforcement thing a very believable lie. This is credit/debit card information that got exposed we’re talking about due to an attack. Customers funds and stability. While it’s not impossible the police could’ve told them to pause, given the situation, it doesn’t make any logical sense. The customers need to know right away so they can get a replacement card immediately if need be.

A social science theory that related to this is called the Conflict theory by Karl Marx. A lot of it has to do with lack of accountability from the company and trying to reduce the financial loss they already have garnered from this which is what this Glass Washer Parts as a company is doing right now. The power dynamics, inequality and how they try to save their reputation and business as much as possible. It’s understandable, but with the lack of apology, it really shows where their concerns lie. They put the blame the third-party they hired instead of everyone taking responsibility as a whole. Another social theory here is the labeling theory. This has a lot to do with deflection. The customers will see themselves as the victim and rightfully so. They’d reconsider the integrity of the company as well. The company really just is the communicator and relays the incident message. In a way they downplay this, and they don’t. The lack of guilt and accountability from the message says it all.

The first thing I noticed about this Sample Data Breach Notification was the fact that this company did not apologize at all for the inconvenience this caused on the customer.
