Write up from one of my classes

The event was mainly focused on people who had a career in sociology and criminal justice. It was more like a panel where there was one person who asked questions to the presenters about their career, choices they have made or anything else to do with having a career in sociology. At the end of the event there was a Q&A if any of the audience had any questions that wanted to ask. What was interesting about the event is much like the last one, a lot of the information talked about could be applied to any field not just sociology or criminal justice. It was just good career advice. I feel attending these events has helped me a lot. In my short time here in ODU, I think some of the information discussed here made feel a lot better about going in the work field. I have always had a growing anxiety about graduating and not being able to find a good job. I have heard how hard it is and it’s something I think about a lot. But going to these events has made feel a lot better and has even given me some tools to help me find a job once I do graduate.  They talked a lot about networking and getting your foot in the door. Asking questions, having a positive attitude, these are some of the qualities they talked about having. I’m not majoring in sociology or criminal justice. However, I still feel I benefitted from attending because I do find the field of criminal justice to be interesting. At one point I wanted to study law, and it’s still something I think about honestly.  As I said before a lot of was mainly general career advice that could be applied to any field. One of the things that I found interesting from the event is that some of the people there, originally weren’t going to go in the criminal justice system/field.  It wasn’t the career choice they had in mind, and they sort of just stumbled upon it or saw someone else working in the field and decided that was the career choice they wanted to do. I hear that a lot and I think it’s especially interesting because it can be often very hard or scary to pick a major while you’re in college. I used to major in business for the longest time until I switched to cyber security only recently.

Overall, I really liked attending the event and felt like it was beneficial to me in a lot of ways. I learned a lot about a field that I didn’t know much about before and I got to hear it straight from people who have all ready been through the whole process in building your career.
