By viewing their profiles, I was able to understand that not everything is the same everywhere. Depending on where you live, how colleges in America do things such as housing on campus might not be the same as what it is in other countries when it comes to dorming. Furthermore, when it comes to doing specific things, it is the same as America. It is true that everyone has their own preferences and that is true not only for Americans but also for people in other countries around the world. It is especially important when it comes to communication. Depending on the country, some people will prefer to use WhatsApp while others will prefer to use social media platforms such as Facebook or Messenger for messaging. Among the various ways in which we communicate in America, one of the most popular ways is through phone calls or e-mails. As a result of gaining a greater understanding of how other countries do things, it opened my eyes to a whole new world of understanding that just as America has its own methods that make sense, so do other countries have their own methods that make sense as well. Having gained this knowledge, I am confident that both the United States of America and the other countries that I have studied could benefit from receiving ideas and inspiration for their own countries so that they will have a better quality of life in their daily lives.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging in immediate communities and global communities not only allows students to learn something new, but also allows them to reflect on similarities and differences between immediate and global communities. Students in America and around the world can benefit from understanding the immediate and global communities by gaining ideas and useful information that might help them in the way they learn or how things go in that specific community.

Interpersonal Communication

Through an in-person interview in which we spontaneously asked another classmate questions in Spanish, we used interpersonal communication. Additionally, we had in-person interviews with professors where the questions were given to the students but the ones to be asked were unknown to them. In these assessments, I have grown not only in understanding what is being said but also in giving a response back that focuses on what the statement or question is about. I had difficulty understanding what they were saying and listening to them. It is necessary to be able to understand what is being said in order to have interpersonal communication. In order to overcome these challenges, I studied different words and phrases that could be used to understand what they are saying in Spanish off the top of my head. Through these assessments, I was able to listen and respond back in Spanish to what the other person was saying. Attached down below a video assignment between myself and a classmate as we represent interpersonal communication.

Presentational Speaking

During this semester presentational speaking was represented in Project 2-1 La entrevista. Our task was to create a two-minute video interview and spontaneously ask questions to a Spanish speaker. The assignment for Project 4-1 Mi Universidad required me to make a two-minute video describing at least three places on campus that I enjoy visiting. The two projects challenged my verbal communication skills and my ability to understand what I am saying. In particular, in project 2-1, the challenge was understanding and answering your partners’ questions in Spanish. Project 4-1 challenged me verbally as I had to talk to a camera while making sure the audience I was speaking to in Spanish understood what I was saying. Additionally, I had to make sure my pronunciation and hand gestures were correct. To overcome all of these challenges, I prepared scripts and worked on my pronunciations and hand gestures before recording the video. With practice, I improved my pronunciation and understatement to what I was saying as well as what my partner was saying in project 2-1. My performance on project 4-1 was not only excellent in terms of pronunciation and verbal gestures, but also creativity. It is unlikely that I would do anything differently if I had a second chance. Attached down below is my Spanish 4-1 project.

Spanish Project 4-1

Presentational Writing

Writing about Old Dominion University campus and writing about people that inspire and inspire each student this semester were examples of presentational writing. I found the assignments to be straight-forward and easy to understand. As we discussed what we love about ODU and the places we spend time at, it was easy to choose places to write about, but writing about them in Spanish was more challenging due to grammar issues. Due to grammar charts, it was easy to overcome this difficulty since the charts explained which verb tense to use and which ending to use. The most outstanding part is the vocabulary and the language used to describe the places. By using better grammar beforehand, I will be able to avoid making last-minute changes. Attached down below is a link to my writing assessment on Old Dominion University.

ODU-writing-1-3.docx

Interpretive Listening

As part of this semester’s interpretive listening exercises, we conducted interviews with our teacher as well as our classmates. As part of the interview, our teacher spoke Spanish to us, and we responded in Spanish to demonstrate our understanding and listening skills. While speaking to each other as classmates, we had to listen to what the other person said in Spanish, and make sure our responses matched what the other person said. In class, the teacher often spoke to us in Spanish, then asked what he said, and we answered. Furthermore, we practiced listening skills in class by asking questions to each other in Spanish and responding in Spanish back. In addition, we listened to recordings of people from different countries and broke down their statements about their countries. In listening, the most challenging part was understanding what was being said or asked. Especially if the speaker is speaking fast without pausing. To overcome this challenge, I used context clues and adapted them to the topic at hand. As I listen the sentence or question, I would pick out a few words and consider what is being said and in what context it makes sense. In this section, I found it most interesting that tone plays a large role in understanding what someone is saying. Identifying their tone will provide you with a background on their emotion, which can help you figure out what they are talking about, whether it’s something they are passionate about or something they dislike. Through these activities, I have grown in understanding and picking up on what the person is saying through the words they use and how they say it. Attached down below is a video used in class to listen and understand.

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/contrasena/video/VIDEO_02-01_Texto.mp4

Interpretive Reading

Reading homework assessments were used in class to demonstrate interpretive reading. During class, the professor asked us to read people’s profiles or comments about how things are in their country. Reading and understanding the person’s responses was the most challenging part of this assessment. In order to overcome this difficulty, I studied more vocabulary and verbs that can be used to form sentences. In addition to using context clues, trying to understand what the person is saying from what I already know. Reading the person’s profile or what they said about their country was interesting as you learned something new as you read it. As I read the text fluently, my personal growth has taken place as I am now able to pronounce the words correctly and understand what I am saying.
