The topic that I spent the rest of the internship on was doing research that would help Valor’s clients with compliance with various government standards/protocols. To begin, I was tasked with helping Valor develop a spreadsheet that allows users to input how well they meet compliance requirements for every one of the different categories. My role was mainly making sure that they were all laid out properly, and developing functions to ensure that when you change the information in one place, it dynamically updated to the overall total for the client. This was mainly focused on the NIST 800-171A SRPS scoring system, but I did not interact with this much besides formatting on the spreadsheet.

After this, I transitioned into the assignment that I would work on for the rest of the semester. Around mid-October, a new law/rule was passed that essentially established more stringent rules for compliance for interacting with the military from an outside perspective and enforced these rules with inspections from the appropriate party. This required Valor to reevaluate their compliance assistance for clients and determine what was the best method for them to get compliant based on their personal needs. This is where I come in. There were a large variety of compliances that a company might need based on what they do (CMMC, DoD, NIST, etc.), and I evaluated many of the leading programs for offering these tools such as Microsoft’s GCC High and Google’s Government Cloud. This was a very lengthy process in which I determined what each program does and does not provide, the various pros and cons of their services, and how much they cost to both install and maintain.

Conclusion

By the end of my time at Valor, I was much happier with where I ended up than I was at the beginning. It was quite a rocky road, but I finally ended up doing something that captivated me and learned a lot in the process. Independent from the internship work, I also received very helpful feedback and personal advice from Greg about how to progress in the industry and hopefully find a job quickly out of college this winter. Overall, I found this to be a very enriching experience that helped guide me towards my future in the field.

Zack Mitchell Reflection #3 The Final Fifty Hours of My Internship Going into my final section of my time interning at Valor Cybersecurity, I finally began to move away from marketing and focused more on the proper cyber developments… Continue Reading →
