She attended Old Dominion University and obtained her bachelor’s degree in science in May of 2021. Shavae currently holds a number of different positions and certifications in the healthcare field. Her main job position is as a registered nurse at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters but she also works as a pediatric dermatologist, part-time employee at Patient’s First, and a pharmacy technician. Some of the certifications that Shave holds include:

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Certification

Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification

CPR Certification

Basic Life Support Certification

EMT Certification

Personal Care Aide Certification

Medical Assistant Certification

Shavae was inspired to pursue the healthcare career field due to the fact that her great grandmother and mother worked in the field since before she was a child so she practically grew up learning about and being surrounded in the healthcare environment. Not only that but Shavae was also inspired by the numerous career paths that being in the healthcare field provided. As a healthcare professional there are a number of paths that you can choose to pursue, not only on its own but also simultaneously with other closely related positions. Shavae was able to obtain the positions and certifications that she currently holds by starting her career as a healthcare professional at the age of 16, making sure that she didn’t limit herself to just one thing, and by expanding her network with other healthcare professionals through the jobs she’s held and by studying abroad with other individuals interested in/pursuing/actively working in the field.

As an individual that holds so many positions and certifications, Shavae’s day-today tasks vary, but one of her main roles is making sure that she serves as the eyes, hands and ears for the doctors that she works under so that the patients can receive the best and most efficient care. When asked about what she thinks the most rewarding aspect of her career is, Shavae said that she really enjoyed being able to work in pediatrics and make a change in a child’s life especially when they’re at such a tender and malleable age. Being able to change their outlook on things even though they’re going through it and work towards helping change the things they’re going through for the better is what makes her go home feeling accomplished and rewarded as a healthcare professional.

One of the main things that I’ve learned from this interview is that being a healthcare professional requires a lot of diligence and hard work in order to obtain those things you would like to achieve. Not only that but working as a healthcare professional is more than just a job. As I was talking to Shavae and listening to her answer my questions with so much passion, I came to the realization that being a healthcare professional becomes a part of who you are.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NH1q1Mx5HWRMkj2gVH99ZJdHkQSxqinq/view?usp=sharing

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iPSG6KWID0KvMv9uovezoURccLA3sh55/view?usp=sharing

The Story of an Ambitious Healthcare Professional For my interview, I had the pleasure of being able to speak to Shavae Ward.
