Exploring Culture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A discussion board that my class did a few months ago helped me to gain understanding of different cultural perspectives. While completing this discussion, I was able to realize some similarities within my own culture. Being Haitian, I can appreciate kissing someone on the cheek (usually an elder) when greeting them or saying goodbye. There has never been a time where I went to visit my grandmother and did not give her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. It is nice to know that there are other cultures that share some of my customs that I am familiar with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Engaging in Communities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The importance of engaging in your immediate community would be the support that you receive from others. The value of having people in your corner is essential when it comes to life. I can say first hand that it is not easy doing everything yourself and having people that you can count on is very nice. My mom always tells me that it takes a village to raise a child and I could not agree with her more. When it came to raising her children, she would ask for help whenever she needed it since it is very difficult to do everything for everyone while still making sure that you are taken care of as well. If she was not engaged with her community and did not get to know people, it could have made her life much harder than it had to be. It is such a great thing that she was able to depend on those in her community to help her and her family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interpersonal Communication<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my Spanish class, we had to complete an assignment of us recording ourselves reciting the alphabet and the words Professor Donoghue chose for us to say. I was able to grow with this assignment because it helped me to practice my pronunciation and being more comfortable with pronouncing words I may not have seen before. Being able to communicate this way and display my growth throughout the class allows me to be more confident when it comes to the language. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presentational Speaking<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most helpful assignments that have really helped me throughout the course would be the FlipGrid assignments that we had to complete. This helped me to get familiar with what I had to do for each assignment since I knew that we would have to do more of these in the future. For the first one, we had to listen to what our professor said and then recorded ourselves on our phone while having her voice playing in the background. We also had to make sure that we would respond when appropriate to ensure that we understood what she was saying. The next time I did, I would try to see if I could understand what she was saying without any outside help. It was also nice that I had time to prepare what I had to say and make sure that I answered her questions thoroughly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presentational Writing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a discussion board, we were told that we had to write about our favorite person and why they are special to us. The twist that was added for the assignment was that we had to write two of the sentences for our response in Spanish. The difficult part would be having to think about what I am going to say instead of being able to speak without thinking like I usually do. I was able to overcome the difficulties by practicing and using prior knowledge from past assignments. I was able to excel when it came to this assignment because it is not the first time I have had to do this. Next time, I believe that I could do better next time by not using outside sources to help me complete the assignment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interpretive Listening<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a website we use called Lingro Learning, which allows us to get better at writing and listening in Spanish. There was one assignment I remember specifically that had us record ourselves while pronouncing the words that were on the screen. The first one I had to complete was difficult since Spanish is not my first language. Fortunately, with time and practice, I was able to get more comfortable doing them. It also helped me when it came to completing the FlipGrids for the class since they were kind of the same thing. The most challenging part would be speaking Spanish since it is not something I do all the time. However, I was able to overcome this challenge by practicing and studying. I believe that with each activity, I am learning more and more each day and absorbing so much information that I did not know before. Being able to listen to the conversations and choose the right answer ensures me that I am on the right track. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interpretive Reading<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lingro Learning is a very useful website that allows us to expand on our Spanish speaking skills. There is one assignment that I remember completing that I found very helpful and challenging. There were 12 words that we had to pronounce and record ourselves so that it could be graded by our teacher. When I went to look at the instructor feedback and saw that she had said it was excellent, it made me confident when speaking Spanish and let me know that I was getting better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
