This topic relates mainly to the social science principles of parsimony and empiricism. When it comes to cybersecurity awareness programs, parsimony is very important. When studying the effectiveness of cybersecurity awareness programs, you also need to study how well the people you are trying to inform understand the information. If they do not understand what you are trying to make them aware of, then the program is already failing at what it is supposed to do. Empiricism is also important when it comes to these programs. There is not point in warning people about things that we are not sure about yet. Making them worry about possibilities could take their attention away from the already confirmed issues.

Research Question and Methods

The overall research question of this article is “What factors to measure and how to measure them during the evaluation process” (Chaudhary, 2022) regarding evaluating how effective an awareness program was. This was done in a two-step process. First, a literature was completed on 32 papers. Th purpose of the literature reviews was to see what factors were measured by the papers and to see how the factors were measured. After the literature reviews were completed, then the European Literacy Policy Network’s four indicators for awareness evaluation were adapted so that they were able to be used to evaluate cybersecurity awareness programs.

Data and Analysis

The main data that was gather, as mentioned earlier, was to see what factors were measured by the reviewed literature and how said literature measure them. They also gathered suggested factors and suggested measurements. The factors measured by the reviewed literature were behavior, attitude, knowledge, interest, reachability, touchability, value added, usability, and overall feedback. The methods used to measure these factors were Surveys, tests, passive data, face-to-face interactions, and observations. After reviewing the literature, it was found that behavior, attitude, and knowledge were the most measured factors. Surveys were the most used method of measurement.

Concepts

One concept from the PowerPoints that I think really fit into this article is diversity and cybersecurity. When measuring something like the effectiveness of cybersecurity awareness programs, diversity is key. All kinds of people use the internet. In order to make sure that these awareness programs are truly effective, every type of user musty be evaluated. Just because it was effective in teaching one person does not mean it was effective to everyone. There will always be an issue of whether or not it was effective in informing everyone, but as long as it is more effective than not, then it is going in the right direction.

Challenges, Concerns, and Contributions

As mentioned above, diversity in cybersecurity is very important. When looking at cybersecurity, some of the more typical marginalized groups would be the elderly and the more digitally illiterate. These are the people more likely to be targeted by cybercrimes. The purpose of a cybersecurity awareness program is to inform people of possible cyberthreats and how to protect themselves. These are the perfect types of programs to help inform people of these groups. This study will help to make it so that the people that are a part of these groups are effectively informed of this crucial information.

Contribution to Society

This study plays a huge role in societal well-being. As mentioned above, cybersecurity awareness programs are meant to inform people of possibly cyberthreat and how to protect themselves. This information is necessary for people to safely use the internet. Without these types of programs, people who are not the most digitally literate would be wide open to cyberattacks.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this study is important for the future. It will play a huge role in the digital protection of many people. If this study succeeds in making cybersecurity awareness programs more effective, then that would mean that people would be safer on the internet.

References

Chaudhary, S., Gkioulos, V., & Katsikas, S. This main social science principle that this article pertains to is the principle of parsimony. When it comes to teaching not only high school students, but the teachers as well, about cybersecurity, it is important to make sure that the curriculum is as simple and easy to understand as possible. If the teachers cannot even understand what they are teaching, then who knows how well the students will do. Another social science principle that pertains to this article is the principle of relativism in a way. Not only does the education system rely on cybersecurity but the public in general relies on school systems to educate the youth. If they are not educated, then there is chance that they may suffer in areas that could have otherwise been avoided. Objectivity is also another social science principle that relates to this article. The educations system is supposed to teach people based on whatever the curriculum is regardless of personal opinions. There are times where teachers may voice their opinions, but they still teach based off od the curriculum.

Research Question and Methods

The research question of this paper is about current curriculum and learning method regarding cybersecurity and how to improve them. The research methods used for this article include surveys, interviews, and a capture the flag contest. For the surveys and interviews, European people were asked questions pertaining to cybersecurity education in high schools. The capture the flag game was used to test students’ current cybersecurity knowledge. As I mentioned, the data gathered was how well-informed teachers and students were in cybersecurity as well as preferred methods of learning pertaining to cybersecurity.

Concepts, Challenges, Concerns, and Contributions

A concept that relates to this article is diversity in cybersecurity. The main diversity being talked about is how people prefer to learn about cybersecurity. People learn best in many different ways. That is what one of the survey questions was in regard to the preferred way to learn about cybersecurity. In some cases, you can consider students as a marginalized group. There are times where most student can’t do anything besides go to school and learn. Some students are able to influence their school, but a majority only go to learn. As I mentioned already, an important part of this article is figuring out the best way to implement cybersecurity curriculum into the European school system. The possible contributions of this study could be major for Europe. It is very important for students to gain knowledge in the field of cybersecurity so that that are not only well protected in cyberspaces themselves, but they can also make sure that others are well protected.

Societal Contributions

As I mentioned earlier, the main societal contribution of this article is the education of teachers and students in the field of cybersecurity. This alone is very important. People not practicing good cybersecurity could lead to huge consequences not only for them, but those around them. As I also mentioned earlier, the people that learn about cybersecurity in school can then go on to teach others about it. This can help spread good cybersecurity practice and better the cybersecurity practices of their community.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this article focuses on curriculum regarding the field of cybersecurity. The affects of this article and the studies conducted can prove to be very positive for not only the European school system, but its communities. There are many more people that will be affected by this study than just teachers and students. It is very important that this study produce positive results and practices. It is also important for other places to learn from this article and its research. Everyone every can benefit from being educated in the field of cybersecurity.

References
Blažič, A. J., & Blažič, B. J.
