Crime has always played a huge role in society. The many definitions of what it means for something to be “criminal” include being against the law, being against norms, and being harmful to society, to name a few. As technology has advanced over the years, there has also been an advancement in possible crimes that can be committed using said technology. Whenever a crime is committed, there is always a victim. The victims of can range from a single individual to a group or even an entire business. The advancements to technology and crime have strongly impacted the interactions between offenders and victims. Before technology was able to be used to commit crimes, crimes were physically committed by criminals. This made it easier to spot criminal activity. This also made it more likely for someone to witness the crime and possibly be able to help identify the offender. Thanks to the advancement of technology, offenders can now commit crimes from behind a screen wherever they want. This means that the offender can commit a crime against the victim from far away. This alone raises the number of possible suspects to anyone with access to technology. This also means that there is the chance that the victims will never know who committed the crime against them. Depending on the crime committed, there is also the chance that the victim might not even know a crime was committed against until much later, if at all. The advancement of technology has also lead to news ways to commit already existing crimes as well as an increase in there severity. Before technology, theft and robbery was only able to be committed on physical objects. Now, people can steal all kinds of information. A good example of this is identity theft. It is now possible for someone to be able to steal someone else’s identity. In some cases, the victim will not know that their identity was stolen unless alerted by an outside entity.
