How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims?
Gone are the days when one is truly alone. Having technology all around everyone, it makes it so that we’re all connected. While that is the purpose of technology, to build bridges, to connect, to be able to share with one another, it has brought a myriad of challenges. Having social media and other platforms where people can connect brings in a whole different dimension. While at home, instead of being on their own or with families, one can talk and communicate with others from their lives, from work, school, and other activities. Almost breaching this sense of privacy or lonesome one can have while at their house. It is especially impactful for the relationship between offenders and victims. While victims may have safety from physical harm if in a safe and secure place such as a home, granted some offenders may be from within the home or from family, there is an added online place. This can prove to be a problem as an offender can continue harassment towards the victim. They can spam message them, comment on their media, falsely report the media as inappropriate and more. It acts as another gateway for an offender to continue their actions towards someone. If a victim has an online life, posting and sharing media or content on their platforms, the offender can use this to stalk and figure out the location of a victim or where they live. They can also use this to create weird and or inappropriate content from the media a person actually has out, continuing the offender’s harassment. Cyber technology in this way can make interactions between offenders and victims even more worse. Alternatively, cyber technology can make a person safer from an offender. Once registered, an offender depending on the severity of their crime or action can be marked and tracked down. Whether that be an online registry where their name shows up as well as address, showing transparency about the offender’s location. Moreover, an offender can be tracked down by cyber technology in order to be apprehended from interacting from a person. For example, having a tracker on an offender’s leg. Or having security cameras around the area to see an offenders whereabouts. This is how cyber technology can help prevent interactions between them and their victim.
