Week 11

When looking at the ethical and political standpoint in this situation, I would consider this cyberwar because Russia had gone beyond its border and infiltrated the United States network. Maybe they weren’t trying to steal information but they were intentionally putting ads out to influence people to follow their ideas and guidelines. They didn’t ask the united states for permission to do this so they had gone behind the backs of everyone and had secretly bought Facebook and Twitter ads to do so. Political they were trying to pull the election in their favor and by stealing ad space they could do so. This ethically was not okay for the same reasons because Russia only could put those ads inside of its borders. When they started to put them into the united states it became a cyberwar.

On the other side if you look at the technical definition of cyberwar its an action by a nation or state that attempts to attack or damage another states computers or information network. Russia didn’t steal or attempt to steal information nor did they attempt to damage any network. So ethically Russia didn’t do anything wrong because it was just an act of freedom of speech. Its as if a Russian-American did the same thing would that be considered cyberwar? From a business standpoint, you could potentially use the same excuse because facebook was just selling its ads space to a buyer. That buyer then is allowed to post what they want on that ad space of course within the guidelines but Russia followed all the guidelines.
